  1. The problem of conceptual coherence in psychology: Where should we look for a proper psychological theory?Amadeusz Citlak - 2025 - Journal of Theoretical and Philosophical Psychology 45:1-23.
The aim of this article was to try to address the problem of theoretical coherence and adequacy theory in psychology from the perspective of one of the most influential schools of psychology in Europe at the time, namely the Brentano School. Unfortunately, this school has been marginalized in contemporary psychological science. The conceptual instrumentarium developed in the school—especially the concept of intentionality—offers attractive solutions, the greatest asset of which is the proposal of a coherent theoretical perspective for different types of (...)

  2. Commitment Beyond Justification.Paul Katsafanas - forthcoming - Ergo: An Open Access Journal of Philosophy.
Should our degree of commitment to a value, relationship, or goal be proportional to the degree of justification that we take the commitment to possess? Or are there reasons for maintaining wholehearted commitments even in cases where we have relatively weak justifications for those commitments? I argue in favor of the latter position: degree of commitment should sometimes diverge from degree of justification. To make this case, I introduce and critique what I call Locke’s Dictum: the claim that our degree (...)

  4. Understanding mental causation.Andrea White - 2024 - York: White Rose University Press.
Understanding Mental Causation proposes a new, non-relational theory of mental causation. Andrea White believes that contemporary philosophy of mind labours under a misapprehension of what mental causation is supposed to be. This volume explains where the leading theories go astray, and how the new theory proposed solves critical problems for philosophers of mind and action. Ordinary experience suggests that what we do with our bodies causally depends, somehow, on what is going on in our minds. However, the problem of how (...)

  5. Against the Tyranny of Outcomes.Paul Hurley - 2024 - Oxford: Oxford University Press. Translated by Paul Hurley.
Outcomes tyrannize over prevailing accounts of ethics, actions, reasons, attitudes, and social practices. The right action promotes the best outcome, the end of every action is an outcome to be promoted, reasons to act are reasons to promote outcomes, and preferences and desires rationalize actions that aim at the outcome of realizing their contents—making their contents true. The case for this tyranny turns on a related set of counterintuitive outcome-centered interpretations of deeply intuitive claims that it is always right to (...)

  6. What Rothbard could have done but did not do: The merits of Austrian economics without extreme apriorism.Alexander Linsbichler - 2024 - Philosophical Problems in Science 76:43-84.
Austrian economics emphasizes a priori components of social scientific theory. Most emphatically, Ludwig Mises and Murray Rothbard champion praxeology, a methodology often criticized as extremely aprioristic. Among the numerous justifications and interpretations of praxeology to be found in the primary and secondary literature, conventionalism avoids the charge of extreme apriorism by construing the fundamental axiom of praxeology as analytic instead of synthetic. This paper (1) explicates the tentative structure of the fundamental axiom, (2) clarifies some aspects of a conventionalist defense (...)

This is a Festschrift in honour of Valtteri Arstila, a professor of theoretical philosophy at the University of Turku. The book is structured in three sections. The first two—‘Mind and Action’ and ‘Time and Temporal Experience’—include papers focussed on issues particularly close to Arstila's own research specialisation. The final section contains papers on various further philosophical issues. The first section, ‘Mind and Action’, collects together contributions on a variety of topics such as consciousness, content, agency and normativity; encompassing approaches from (...)

  9. The five principles of middle way philosophy: living experientially in a world of uncertainty.Robert M. Ellis - 2023 - Bristol, CT: Equinox Publishing.
This second book in the 'Middle Way Philosophy' series develops five general principles that are distinctive to the universal Middle Way as a practical response to absolutization. These begin with the consistent acknowledgement of human uncertainty (scepticism), and follow through with openness to alternative possibilities (provisionality), the importance of judging things as a matter of degree (incrementality), the clear rejection of polarised absolute claims (agnosticism) and the cultivation of cognitive and emotional states that will help us resolve conflict (integration).

  10. Cosmovisions and Realities - the each one's philosophy.Roberto Thomas Arruda (ed.) - 2023 - S.Paulo: Terra à Vista -.
It is not by thinking that we create worlds. It is by understanding the world that we learn to think. Cosmovision is a term that should mean a set of foundations from which emerges a systemic understanding of the Universe, its components as life, the world we live in, nature, human phenomena, and their relationships. It is, therefore, a field of analytical philosophy fed by the sciences, whose objective is this aggregated and epistemologically sustainable knowledge about everything that we are (...)
