Abstract

The survey has been conducted in order to analyze the detection results of different levels of understanding of social conditioning by different genders of students of Physics and Mathematics department of Volodymyr Vynnychenko Central Ukrainian State Pedagogical University, the diversity and specificity of gender roles, ascribed to men and women. The aim of the study was achieved as a result of solving the following tasks: а) conduction of surveys and formation of binary matrices of participants’ responses; b) construction of contingency tables and their statistical analysis for quantitative analysis of survey results; c) qualitative analysis of statistical data. Gender specific asymmetry coefficient that expresses the quality measure of the distribution ratio of characteristic features (dominant) in gender groups, has been used to conduct the qualitative analysis. The concepts of specific parity and specific asymmetry have been introduced based on this ratio. Parity and asymmetric beliefs of survey participants on specifics of diversity and gender roles attributed to male and female individuals have been set as the result of the study. Among them the following ideas have been set: the understanding by students of different gender of important problems of providing of equal opportunities for both sexes in a professional self-realization, a difference in treatment between men and women, estimation of their understanding of the content of basic gender concepts and gender attitude to the spread of knowledge in the group, the causes of the situations of restrictions and inconveniences related to sexual belonging, identification of gender stereotypes marked as discomfort resulting in a variety of life situations, preference to teachers of the same sex and gender sensitivity techniques to select candidates from among students to encourage and to give tasks, beliefs about the independence of the success of training and identification of leadership qualities in the team depending on gender. Among the resistance of asymmetric evidence is the understanding of the causes of situations of restrictions and inconveniences related to gender affiliation, the activity of both sexes in the elaboration of additional materials and counseling, understanding of the fact of opposite sex’ gender awareness, the activity of teachers in taking initiative for achieving gender equality, the need for statistical research on gender issues. The fact that both groups of respondents with specific parity showed low motivation for the organization of gender work in general and gender statistical surveys, shows not so much the absence of gender issues among students as a lack of attention to them.
