Max Weber, standing at the apex of the canon of classical sociology Weber's sociology, based on a methodological individualism ‐ seeking to break down collectivities such as classes or nations Weber's targets, holistic and naturalistic interpretations of society values and motives ‐ playing a major role in Weber's sociology Verstehen method ‐ capturing the inner sense in which individuals subjectively interpreted and chose what they were doing economic methods and ideal types Marxism, operating with ideal types ‐ as historically specific relations of production Weber's examination of instrumental social action ‐ drawing on methodology of marginalist economics Weber's argument, that ideal types are purely analytic devices ‐ with no relationship to reality, meaning that he cannot show causal links
