Abstract

Kant‟s assertions about the nature and limits of empirical psychology in relation to philosophical knowledge are well known and have been abundantly discussed in the secondary literature. The latter, however, has centered on the critical period, leaving some important questions for a better understanding of Kantian thought unanswered. Accordingly, a more thorough explanation of the gradual transformation that empirical psychology underwent in Kant‟s thought is called for, from its initial subordination to metaphysics in the tradition of Wolff and his disciple Baumgarten to its dissolution in pragmatic anthropology. The aim of this paper is to present the first results of a larger study that will indicate similarities and differences between Wolff and Kant in their conception of empirical psychology. The concept of empirical psychology and its potential contributions to metaphysics will be emphasized here. Finally, some ramifications of this question in the critical period will be indicated.As afirmações de Kant sobre o lugar e os limites da psicologia empírica em relação ao conhecimento filosófico são bastante conhecidas e têm sido abundantemente relatadas na literatura secundária. Esta última, no entanto, tem se concentrado principalmente no período crítico, deixando em aberto algumas questões importantes para a compreensão do pensamento kantiano. Nesse sentido, é preciso esclarecer de forma mais consistente a gradual modificação que a psicologia empírica foi sofrendo no pensamento de Kant, desde sua filiação inicial à metafísica, nos moldes de C. Wolff e seu discípulo A. Baumgarten , até a sua completa dissolução como parte da antropologia pragmática. O objetivo do presente trabalho é apresentar os primeiros resultados de uma pesquisa mais abrangente, que indicam semelhanças e diferenças na concepção de psicologia empírica entre Wolff e Kant em seu período pré-crítico. Serão enfatizados aqui tanto o conceito de psicologia empírica como suas possíveis contribuições para a metafísica. Por fim, será discutida a questão da continuidade ou ruptura desta concepção pré-crítica em relação à primeira edição da Crítica da Razão Pura
