Abstract

Analysing the possibilities of inconsistency between identity and individual character, this study aims to shed light upon identity and change. Individuals have such characteristics which are exceptions to his or her identity and this phenomenon prevents the identity from representing individuals as a whole. Thus, an overall identification often becomes impossible. Additionally, there is a relationship between the determination of essentialist identities and the notion of power/authority. The decisive roles that power structures hold in determining an identity do not take into account the dynamic aspect of various identities. Throughout this study, the dynamic nature of identity is evaluated on the basis of daily life in Istanbul’s Sulukule, which is a Romani neighbourhood.
