Abstract

The establishment of The Slovak Philosophical Society in 1964 and its character were determined by the favorable social and political atmosphere in the middle of the 1960s. The ambition of the Society was to establish a scientific discussion forum for all professional philosophers in Slovakia. Its objective was the promotion of the Marxist philosophy, deprived of its ideological sediments. The reformation ideas led to liberating Marxism from leninist dogmatism, to incorporating of mo_dern philosophical ideas and even to acceptance of possible plurality of philoso_phical views. Later on the members of the Society discussed also topical problems influencing the life of the philosophical community, both in academic and organizational spheres. This positive trend in building a progressive scientific community was broken off by the arrival of normalization
