Abstract

Novelist, poet, writer, moralist, salonnière: scholars of Madeleine de Scudéry readily employ these terms to recognize her contributions to the seventeenth-century world of letters. Could we also call her a philosopher? Is it possible to speak of the femme philosophe in the Seventeenth Century? Through a close reading of Scudéry's 1686 conversation, De l'Incertitude, I suggest that Scudéry raises these same questions, and that the portrait of the femme philosophe which emerges from this conversation takes shape beyond the limits which Seventeenth-Century scientific discourse would impose upon her
