Abstract

In her mid-fifties, feeling lonely, unattractive and unloveable, Harriet loses the only security she has left... the job she's held at the public library for years. Hitting rock bottom, Harriet gets very drunk at a party, and gets talking to a young man who calls himself the devil. The next day she assumes the bizarre pact she made with him - agreeing to sell her soul in return for youth, beauty, and a second chance - was a drunken dream. But it wasn't... The very next day Harriet wakes up in California, in the body of an American girl in her 20s who's just been killed in a crash. Picking up the life of 'Cindy' - as stunningly unintelligent as she is stunningly beautiful - at first seems all she could hope for, and she revels in her new life of glamour and excitement... especially when she appears to meet the man of her dreams. But there's an awful lot more to come with the physical perfection that she hadn't bargained for, and before long, 'Cindy' is longing to be plain 'Harriet' again.
