Abstract

This paper presents a personal view on the work of RECs from three different viewpoints: as a researcher, as an occasional participant in other people's studies, and as a potential beneficiary from medical research. It is concluded, from all three perspectives, that whilst RECs are making a valuable contribution to medical research there is a danger that in pursuit of their day-to-day business, they may lose sight of their ultimate purpose, which is to help promote the efficient conduct of ethically sound research for the public benefit.
