Abstract

When you’re on call as a chaplain, you live on the edge. One side is simple, a Bible or a quick prayer. But the other side.... My pager went off: “Ten-year-old stabbed in head with a screwdriver.” The pager blinked. I saw the doors spring open in the ER. The stretcher vaulted through the door as the EMTs wasted no time. The 10-year-old girl appeared then disappeared from sight, a squid-like creature sprouting plastic tubes instead of tentacles. She was swallowed by Trauma Room One. Speed forecasts serious trouble.
