Abstract

In his treatise De communibus omnium rerum naturalium principiis et affectionibus (1562), Pererius criticises the traditional triparti tion of the theoretical sciences as founded upon a theory of degrees of abstraction. Pererius considers instead the possibility of dividing up metaphysics into different theories which would be specifically distinct. What consequences flow from this new, systematic division ? How far-reaching will they prove to be ? What future lies ahead for Pererius' ideas in the metaphysical work of Fonseca and Suarez ? To what extent does Pererius' new arrangement foreshadow the working out of the system of Schulmetaphysik ?
