Aristotle devotes a significant portion of the Nicomachean Ethics and the Eudemian Ethics to the topic of virtue of character (ethike arete). In each workhe precedes his detailed treatment of the particular virtues of char-acter (courage, temperance, liberality, and so on) with a general account of ethical virtue (NE II–III. 5; EE II; cf. MM I. 5–19). The general account concludes, in both cases, with an extended discussion of voluntariness (to hekousion) and related notions (NE III. 1–5; EE II. 6–11; cf. MM I. 9–19).
