Abstract
In the formation of symbols, primitive people drew on what was above: the heavenly bodies, and what was below: nature. As visible signs representative of internal ideas, symbols became essential in making a connection between the spiritual and the physical. These universal patterns, the archetypal images that reside in what Jung calls the collective unconscious, have become integral components of literature and art, whether or not inclusion was the creator's conscious intention. ;Part I of this work examines the connection between spiritual symbols and the psycho-neurological functions of the body, mind, and spirit. The objective is to define the spiritual body, the inner system by which the Divine is contacted in the transcendental journey. ;Part II analyzes universal symbols that appear in 132 love songs written in the first half of the twentieth century that relate to transcendence, the spiritual body, and stages of the spiritual journey. ;Part III recreates a mythical spiritual journey through the lyrics of these songs from mental awakening to transformation and resurrection
