This article would like to discuss Mr. Tang Jun-yi's influence on Taiwanese Confucianism. Before delving into the text, there are some things to be clarified: From the time of the Western Han, Confucianism was of a private nature and found expression in cohorts with the imperial court by means of a "cultural education". Confucianism's understanding of the "way of heaven" was that of a supreme being as a lord. Post-Sung dynasty Confucianism substituted a mystical naturalism in putting forth a more spiritualistic "way of heaven". This did not, however, mark a break in the Confucianist "cultural teaching". In the early years of the Republicof China, there was a certain tendency toward anti-traditionalism. This tendency included a denouncement of Confucianism and Confucius. It advocated democracy and science, predominately western notions. During this period there appeared scholars against the trend to use a purely western approach. They, in turn, combined western speculative philosophy with Sung-Ming "Li Xue" in advancing a new explanation of Chinese culture and, in effect, creating a modern Neo-Confucianism. Tang Jun-yi's philosophy went through different stages of development ending with his establishment of "The mind with Its Nine Dimensions". In discussing Mr. Tang's influence on Taiwanese Confucianism, it should be noted that he traveled to Taiwan seven times and was involved in forming Taiwanese Neo-Confucianism. Mr. Mou Zhong-san, however, had difficulties with accepting Mr. Tang's later philosophical advancements and denounced his theories. After Mr. Mou's death, Xiong Shi-li continued Mr. Mou's work and took Taiwanese Confucianism into a new direction
