Abstract

Essentially, a complaint regarding philosophy in its most current iterations. This paper is not an attack on specific traditions, but its objective is to instead point out a betrayal of the classical philosophical praxis and tradition. It is a betrayal of questioning and being that pesky, Socratic gadfly regarding people and institutions of power. The key objective is to not only draw a link between the philosopher and said institutions but also to show that the philosopher does not exist in a vacuum—they are products of their time, even if not merely that. At its end, this short essay will make a call to uphold that precious tradition and preserve philosophy’s braver elements in the face of power and adversity.
