Abstract

“Two contributions on the stability and determinism of natural systems”. One of the main teachings of Ilya Prigogine´s book The Laws of Chaos is that contemporary natural science neatly reveals the presence of chance and chaos in the constitution of most dynamical systems. He states that indeterministic systems are an irreducible mixture of determinism, randomness and stochasticity. The Russian chemist opposes thus his interpretation of contemporary science as an activity rightly conscious of indeterminism and the creativity of an irreversible time, to a modern science which was, according to him, conditioned by a reversible time uncapable of creativity and erroneously oriented towards determinism. On the other hand, the French physicist Théodore Vogel´s main contribution in For a Renewed Mechanistic Theory is to show that mechanism is our best scientific model. This model presupposes the stability of systems, causation and determinism. The mechanistic thinker hopes that the development of mathematics, its main tool, will allow the renewal of the mechanistic categories and the reduction of the zones of indeterminacy. Now face to these opposed philosophies of natural science my attitude is in no way neutral: I try to criticize Prigogine´s vision and argue for Vogel´s belief in causality, determinism and the unity of the method of modern and contemporary science.La observación principal de Ilya Prigoine, tal como la desarrolla en Las leyes del caos , es que la ciencia natural contemporánea pone de manifiesto la existencia del azar y del caos en la constitución de la mayoría de los sistemas dinámicos; afirma que tales sistemas son una mezcla irreductible de determinismo y de azar. El químico ruso contrapone así su interpretación de la ciencia contemporánea -actividad consciente del indeterminismo y de la irreversibilidad temporal creadora, y que por eso estaría en lo cierto- a la ciencia moderna que habría estado, según él, condicionada por un tiempo reversible conservador y erróneamente orientada hacia el determinismo. Por su parte, la contribución principal del físico francés Théodore Vogel en su obra Por una teoría mecanicista renovada consiste en mostrar que no existe mejor modelo científico que el mecanicismo. Este modelo presupone la estabilidad de los sistemas, la relación causal, el determinismo, y se enracina en la esperanza de que las matemáticas, la herramienta principal del pensador mecanicista, permitirán renovar las categorías mecanicistas y reducir, en consecuencia,las áreas de indeterminación. Ahora bien, yo no adopto una actitud neutra en esta oposición de filosofías de la ciencia natural sino que intento criticar las ideas de Prigogine y poner de relieve el valor de la posición de Vogel
