Abstract
Some of the aspects of Giusto Bellavitis’s life dealt with in this paper provide an opportunity to contribute to a better knowledge of both the Venetian mathematician’s background and the Italian mathematical culture of that period, particularly the first part of the nineteenth century. Apart from mathematical topics, we will discuss Bellavitis’s political affiliation and the shared or diverse attitude of his partners, i.e., colleagues and friends, concerning the political and military events that occurred during the Third Italian War of Independence.
