Abstract

This chapter considers the work of Augustus De Morgan, George Boole, Stanley Jevons, Charles Dodgson, John Venn, and, more briefly Hugh MacColl. It considers issues in the symbolisation of logic and criticisms of the theory of the syllogism, and concludes with some speculations on what was achieved and what was not.
