Abstract

Presents a critical evaluation of Michael Dummett's views on theory and meaning as outlined in his 1975 and 1976 articles, "What is the Theory of Meaning (I)," and "What is the Theory of Meaning (II)," with a view to articulating and defending a distinctive interpretation of the theory of meaning and the role it may play in a theory of linguistic understanding. Examines aspects including Tarski's semantic conception of truth, Dummett's anti-psychologism, modesty in the theory of meaning, Dummett's concept of implicit knowledge, and Searle and the case against tacit knowledge.
