Abstract

Psychology is once again in the course of rapid change in both metaphysics and method. Unfortunately recent studies of human action by philosophers have contributed less to this movement than they might. Putting the matter very crudely the failure of much contemporary action theory to influence the human sciences can be attributed to an adherence to an outmoded philosophy of science and an outdated theory of causation. I shall be dealing with only one specific example of recent action theory in this paper, that of Davidson, but its shortcomings are fairly typical of the approach.
