In one of his last papers (“Radio Talk,” 1981), Erving Goffman reflected on two themes that will be useful for this chapter. One is the notion of faultables: elements in an individual's linguistic performance that either the speaker or the listener can find fault with, or can find reasons to try to repair or to counter.
