Abstract
Published in Germany in 1977, this thoroughly researched and well-reasoned advocacy of music education as an important and necessary part of the total communication curriculum couldn't be more timely for American educators today. This study goes much further into the crucial subject than any other of its kind. The author's 14-page bibliography includes not only most of the respected German philosophers, educators, and musicians of the last half-century but also a number of English sources as well. The book deserves national attention and should be read by all who are serious about the teaching of music as it relates to a total curriculum. Here we have the tools of reason with which to battle the powers that be, who seek to remove the study of music from its rightful place in the required curriculum and make it simply an elective or extracurricular subject.
