Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to discuss some fundamental problems which stand in the way of constructing an adequate theory of rationality. So the paper is primarily about problems, not solutions. Part of my point is that the problems are deep and the putative solutions shallow. In discussing these problems, I aim to get at the core of the difficulty they present, hence I shall ignore details, the twists and turns of arguments. I hope to achieve an overview, and, if I am right, it is not an encouraging one.
