Reflexive modernization: the problem of interpretation

Abstract

The article deals with the analysis of the contemporary sociological analysts (U. Beck, E. Giddens, P. Sztompka, etc.) from a position of opening the specific concept of reflexive modernization, its features, value prediction methods for searching, managing and controlling risks in society, the occurrence of which is due to the modernization processes. It is alleged, that the concept of «reflexive modernization» is ambivalent, as combining two opposite characteristics. On the one hand, are created reason to hope that reflexivity is able to control the processes of modernization in society, their consequences and risks associated with them. On the other hand, the reflection of social reality does not guarantee avoiding such elements as uncertainty and unpredictability. The positive side of reflexivity ordering components can be crossed advantage of such features of modernization progress as eksperymental nature of social development, loss the control over the process and further increase the risks and dangers.
