Abstract
An Ethical Oath for Veterinarians. As previous contributors have noted, the nature of the oath that veterinarians, like doctors, should swear upon entering their profession has become increasingly topical. T he American Veterinary Medical Association adopted a revised form of their oath as recently as 2014 which emphasizes animal welfare. Here is the new oath with the additions in italics: Being admitted to the profession of veterinary medicine, I solemnly swear to use my scientific knowledge and skills for the benefit of society through the protection of animal health and welfare, the prevention and relief of animal suffering, the conservation of animal resources, the promotion of public health, and the advancement of medical knowledge.
