Abstract
Logical reasoning rests on the fundamental psychological ability to recognize contradiction. All theories of logical reasoning in psychology depend on this principle, as does formal logic itself. The ability to recognize contradiction rests in turn on several psychological principles which make content crucial and allow for formal logical thinking without appeal to formal logic . A view of logical reasoning based on these principles and 7 experiments illuminating findings contested by various theories of reasoning are presented in the following pages
