‘I, Polybius’: self-conscious didacticism?1

Abstract

This chapter argues that Polybius self-consciously defines and draws attention to his role as historian and didactic authority more than any other ancient historian. Through careful employment of the authorial ‘I’, Polybius takes on an unusually prominent role as narrative guide, navigating the reader through his chosen genre of universal with its many parts and wide scope.
