Abstract

In the Nicomachean Ethics, Aristotle presentsphronesis as an intellectual virtueproper solely of human beings. However,in several passages of his biological writings, theauthordescribescertainanimalsasintelligent.Startingformthisdifficulty, thistextanalyzesthemeaningoftheconceptof phronesis in its animal scope. Forthis, it tracks, at first, the term in books II,III and VI of the Nicomachean Ethics. Afterthat, it introduces and discusses a readingabout this issue derived from the VIII bookof History of Animals, in order to propose, finally, a new interpretation in which isplausible to speak of animal phronesis, notin the sense proposed on the Ethics as awhole, but as a virtue related with the vitalacts of animals
