Art Lessons: Slow Pedagogy for the Moral Life in advance

Abstract

In 1988, The Annual of the Society of Christian Ethics published an essay based on a survey of sixty-three members regarding their use of art in teaching Christian ethics. This essay builds on that research with findings from a 2023 survey asking current members the same question. To these insights from colleagues, I add two related concepts from pedagogical theory: slow looking from Shari Tishman and a pedagogy of inhabitance from Jennifer Ayres. I argue that learning with art develops habits of pace and place that are essential to the moral life.
