How teacher trainers’ beliefs influence their teaching and assessment of oral skills

Abstract

Oral communication skills are essential to life in society. Yet, in French-speaking Belgium, this skill is rarely taught or assessed, either in compulsory education or in initial teacher training, even though it is called upon during internships and training courses. Our research questions are: When and how is oral language taught and assessed in teacher training? Is there a link between trainers' beliefs and their practices? To answer these questions, a content analysis was used to identify trainers' portraits and beliefs.
