Focusing on the interdependance between analogical and descriptive images, Dr. Morris presents a comprehensive analysis of the role of elemental imagery in the six major novels of Bernanos. His study not only demonstrates the extent to which Bernanos relies on elemental imagery in creating his fiction, but also reveals that elemental imagery forms the basis of Bernanos' physical and spiritual universe and a synthesis of meaning essential to understanding his work.
