Report: Le cinéma de Bergson: image – affect ‐ mouvement Colloque international 16‐18 Mai 2013 École Normale Supérieure, Paris [Book Review]

Abstract

The conference entitled Le cinéma de Bergson: image, affect, mouvement took place from 16 to 18 May 2013 in Paris. At the beginning it sounds a little bit strange talking about "Bergson's cinema". In effect we all know that in several essays and in the final chapter of Creative Evolution, Bergson employs what he calls the "cinematographical apparatus" as an analogy for how the intellect approaches reality. The cinema is like a metaphor for the fact that the intellect can only express movement – reality itself – in static terms. Anyway it's not a positive judgment. For this reason the real purpose of the conference is to see Bergson's theory of cinema from another point of view. Through the Deleuze's lecture we can discover a "new Bergson" as theorist of what Deleuze calls "ontology of images". In this way it could be possible talk about "Bergson's cinema", to imagine it, to dream it.
