This is a splendid, important book. It is original, masterfully researched, clearly written, and compellingly argued. Both beginners and more advanced readers will find it a valuable guide to the development, meaning, and importance of Royce’s philosophy of religion as set forth in The Problem of Christianity. As such, it is without question one of the very best books on one of the very best philosophers. More significantly, like Royce’s philosophy itself, Oppenheim’s book offers careful reasoning, rich suggestions and fundamental challenges to all reflective persons grappling with, not merely idly considering, issues of individuality, community, love, loyalty, commitment, and salvation.
