A Reading Note On Tolstoj And History

Abstract

Starting from a famous essay by I. Berlin, this note discusses Tolstoj’s anti-historicism, considering it as such just because it represents a worried consciousness of the multiplicity of reality which history expresses. Showing that the magisterial pages of War and Peace display a consciousness of the problems raised during the 19th century by the Methodenstreit über Geschichte, the anti-historical irony of Tolstoj is remarked
