Abstract

Studying Descartes' perspective on morality and understanding how virtue and action work together is crucial in bridging the gap in our understanding of the history of moral philosophy. This history has evolved from eudaemonism to the ethics of duty. The study examines the Stoic and Aquinasian influences on Descartes' philosophy and attempts to uncover his thoughts on the foundation of duty ethics and the system of maxims he calls "Provisional Morality". Ultimately, discussions will continue on whether Descartes' provisional morality has been replaced by a permanent one and whether the system presented in the Passions of Soul is a permanent morality.
