Democratic Oligarchies, Oligarchic Democracies: Democracies without Democracy
Abstract
In his recent book Democrazie senza democrazia Massimo L. Salvadori outlines a brief history of democracy from the ancient world to the global era. Focusing especially on the political systems of the last three centuries, his main thesis is that democracies, in the age of globalization, are simply «democracies without democracy». In his review, the author reconstructs and analyses these arguments with special emphasis on the pivotal problem of the relationship between capitalism and democracy
