청대 고증학은 고전과 경전의 복원(復原)을 통한 법고창신(法古創新) 온고지신(溫故知 新)의 방법론을 주창한 고전주의 학파이다. 하지만 18세기 고증학을 수용하였던 조선의 유학계는 협소한 자구(字句) 해석과 문자학적 훈고(訓誥)에 집중하는 고증학의 경전고변 이 학문적 실용성이 있는가에 대한 의문을 제기하며 또 하나의 지적유희에 젖어들어 훈고 적학 공리공론으로 고증학이 빠져들 것이라는 우려를 떨쳐내지 못하였다. 하지만 조선 중, 후기 유학자들이 고증학 전반에 대하여 비판적인 시각을 견지했던 것 은 아니다. 명청 교체기 초기 고증학의 명대 3대 유로(遺老)인 고염무, 황종희 왕부지 등 에 대해서 조선의 유학계에서는 매우 긍정적이고 우호적인 입장을 모여주는 (...) 것들이 자주 나타난다. 이들의 특징은 경세치용의 실용적 경세론을 주창하는 학자들이었다는 것이다. 명말청초 경세치용의 고증학은 근본적으로 공사 사를 대립적 개념으로 상정했던 송대 성리학과 달리, 공 사의 통일적 관계에 주목한다. 이와 같은 공과 사의 경계 허물기는 조 선 실학사상에서는 결코 피해 갈 수 없는 것이었다. 이에 대한 조심스러운 수용은 기호 남 인계 성호학파에서부터 제기되는 것으로 보인다. 또한 이것은 노론계 북학파에서는 사욕과 탐욕을 위한 근대 자본주의 욕망구조의 승인 이 아닌 국가공동체의 공익을 위한, 즉 공적 영역에서의 사리(私利)의 수용으로 나타난다. 또한 재화와 욕망의 공적 수용이라는 측면에서 유교주의적 경세론에서 벗어나지 않으며 이용후생학파의 이론적 토대가 되기도 한다. 이외에도 황종희의 사회개혁론은 정약용과 최한기 등 당시 조선실학자들에게 막대한 사회사상적 영향을 주었으며 조선 후기 실학사상의 민권 민본주의의 근간을 제공한 것이 다 이렇게 명말청초 초기 계몽파 고증학의. 경세치용적 개혁사상은 조선 실학사상의 사회 변혁 사상의 근간이 되었음은 분명하다. 실학實學은 반주자학 내지는 탈성리학의 성격을 가진 조선조 중후기에 등장한 사회사조로서 실용적이고 개혁적인 양상을 보였으며, 나아가 민족적 각성과 근대적 지향을 드러내는 특징을 가진다. 아마도 이런 정도가 현재 실학이라는 개념이 갖는 의미의 일반일 것이다. 하지만 유감스럽게도 이러한 의미는 조작의 소산일 따름이다. 이는 문헌을 통해서도 금방 확인될 수 있다. 즉 실학의 시대배경인 조선조의 대표적 기록문헌인 『조선왕조실록』을 놓고 그 용례와 빈도를 살피면 된다. 결과적으로 볼 때 적어도 조선시대에는 실학이란 용어가 그다지 많이 사용되지 않았다. 또한 사용되는 경우에 있어서도 대개는 시문을 다루는 사장학詞章學에 대비하여 경학經學이라는 의미로 (...) 제시되었다. 드물게 ‘진실한 학문’이나 ‘실제의 학문’이라는 의미로 사용되는 경우를 볼 수 있으나 현재와 같은 의미는 나타나지 않는다. 따라서 실학이라는 용어가 후대의 조작을 통해 등장한 개념이라는 사실은 분명하다. 물론 후대의 명명 내지는 조작이 무조건 문제인 것은 결코 아니다. 하지만 실학의 경우는 문제의 심각성이 큰 편에 속한다. 현재와 같은 실학의 의미가 등장한 것은 대체로 1930년대의 일이다. 일제 강점기의 상황에서 정인보, 문일평, 안재홍 등과 같은 조선학운동의 선구자들은 정약용의 학문을 정리하는 과정에서 의도적으로 실학이라는 용어를 등장시켰다. 이는 주권을 빼앗긴 울분과 근대성에 대한 열패감을 극복하고 미래의 희망을 제시하려는 메시아적 몸짓이었다. 시세가 급박한 터라 충분한 숙고와 성찰의 소산은 아니었지만 나름의 울림을 마련할 수 있었다. 그리고 이때 마련한 실학의 개념이 이후의 실학논의를 불러일으키는 밑거름이 되었다. 논의를 거칠수록 실학의 개념은 구체화되고 탄탄해졌다. 남과 북은 물론 일본과 중국에서도 이 개념을 수용하면서 자신들의 역사 속에서 독자적 실학을 발견하고자 하는 노력을 기울이는 양상이 나타났다. 하지만 실학의 개념이 확정적일 수 없는 까닭에 이에 대한 논의는 여전히 진행형이다. 이러한 실학의 개념이 가지는 문제는 자못 심각하다. 기본적으로 조선조 중후기에 펼쳐졌다는 실학의 흐름을 구체적으로 통섭할 시대정신을 포착할 수 없다. 그렇기 때문에 현재 실학자로 거명되는 인물들 간의 교류와 연대는 매우 희미하다. 기껏해야 북학파로 일컬어지는 일단의 그룹 정도가 실제적 유대를 가진 것으로 보인다. 사실 실학자로 불리는 사람들은 대부분 중심에서 탈락 또는 이탈한 지식인들이었다. 아니면 명문가 소속이면서도 스스로 변방을 택한 사람들이었다. 현실과의 접점 또한 마련되지 않았던 탓에 이들의 사고는 이미 유토피아적 상상력으로 예단되어 있었다. 따라서 실학이라는 틀을 원용하여 조선조의 사상사를 구획하는 일은 다양성을 차단하는 한편 무리한 획일성의 성긴 그물을 던지는 모습일 뿐이다. 예를 들어 ‘실학의 윤리사상’과 같은 접근은 어불성설이다. 그러니 조선조 사상사의 온전한 그림을 그리기 위해서는 무엇보다도 실학이라는 개념의 주술에서 벗어나야 한다. 물론 단박에 풀어내기는 곤란할 것이니, 실학의 개념에 치명적 결함이 있다는 사실을 명확하게 인식하는 일을 우선으로 한 다음 절충의 태도로 나아가는 과도기적 단계를 밟아야 할 것이다. 더불어 이 문제는 철학이나 예술이라는 용어를 사용하지 않았기 때문에 조선조에는 철학이나 예술을 없었다고 주장하는 것과는 층위가 다르다는 점을 짚어둘 필요가 있겠다. 조선후기 일군의 학자들은 도가철학을 인식의 틀로 활용하여 서양과학을 수용하고 이해하였다. 사실 도가의 기철학은 동양의 전통 과학과 천문학이 형성ㆍ발전하는 과정에서 사상적 원류로 기능하여 왔으며, 서양과학 수용과정에서 서양과학에 상응하는 학문으로 인식되었다. 대표적으로 조선후기 이익의 우주론과 서명응의 선천역학, 홍대용의 과학적 세계관은 도가의 기철학을 인식 기반으로 자연 세계에 대한 인식 전환을 시도한 사례들이다. 그리고 자연에 대한 이들의 인식 전환은 현실질서의 변화에 대한 요구로 이어졌다. 특히 성리학적 도덕원리와 도가의 기철학이 절충된 형태인 이익의 우주론에서 서양의 천문과학은 기철학의 주요 개념에 대응하여 설명되어졌다. 이와 같은 이익의 우주론은 과학의 (...) 영역뿐만 아니라 사회, 정치의 측면에도 영향을 미쳤다. 즉 그는 중화의 위상을 보편적인 것으로 인정하면서도, 조선의 상대주의적 주체성을 주장하였다. 그리고 정치에서는 객관적 황로정치의 도입을 주장하는 법치주의적 정치사상을 논의하였다. 도가철학은 서양과학을 이해하는 해석의 틀로서만 기능한 것이 아니라 실학에도 중대한 영향을 미쳤다. 도가 기철학은 탈이념적이고 실증적인 사유에, 인식 상대주의는 탈중화주의와 주체성의 자각에 기여하였다. 홍대용과 북학파의 실학은 이러한 도가철학의 영향을 가장 많이 받은 것이다. This article reexamines Jeong In-bo’s lifelong studies and achievements from the perspective of understanding him as a statesman. Keenly empathizing the pain of the people who lost their nation, he recognizes that it was the task of the times to reclaim national sovereignty and relieve the people from suffering. He finds the cause of the collapse of Joseon inside Joseon, and diagnoses that all problems originated from ‘thinking of promoting one’s own interests (自私念)’. What he suggested to resolve these problems (...) is ‘to awaken the sincere mind’. He believes that separation can be turned into oneness, conflict into love, and slaughter into revitalization only when ‘thinking of promotion of one’s own interest’ is overcome by awakening the sincere mind of all Joseon people. While studying Yangming studies, Jeong In-bo realized that the sincere mind has the ability to empathize, and verified this realization by his own experience. Through this experience, he submitted ‘empathy of the sincere mind’ as a statecraft principle that can save the world. All of his activities including educational, academic, media and political activities, aim at ‘governing a nation and saving the people’ according to the statecraft principle of ‘empathy of the sincere mind’. Jeong In-bo paved the way for advancing Korean Studies by awakening the importance of Korean Studies to his colleagues and students who worked at Yonhee College. Furthermore, with a deep understanding of Joseon’s reality after liberation, he adopted ‘strengthening and raising the national spirit’, which was the spirit of the times, as his educational ideology, and suggested a way for the nation to move forward by seeking detailed practical plans. He also brought the thoughts and works of Silhak scholars in the late Joseon dynasty into light; from his view, these scholars related to the nation and its people through the sincere mind and academically explored the way to save the nation and its people. He inspired the sense of subjectivity of the people by exploring Joseon’s spirit of 5,000 years in his research on Joseon history, enhancing the sense of identity of our nation. He struggled to solve the problems of the times by spreading his academic achievements through the media and carrying out an enlightenment movement to awaken the sincere mind of the people. Even in his short political term in Syngman Rhee’s government, he tried to correct the bureaucracy. All these academic works and activities of Jeong In-bo were motivated by the determination to save the world. (shrink)

This paper investigates the philosophical characteristics of Songdang Park Yeong, who was an early Dohak scholar in the Joseon Dynasty and played a huge role in making the school of Neo-Confucianism in the regions along the Nakdong River. Park Yeong and his Neo-Confucianism has not been paid much attention to until recently. Significant studies on the school in Neo-Confucianism in the regions along the Nakdong River have been published lately, but research on Park Yeong remains as rare as before. He (...) has not been well known to the philosophical public, though he had made a considerable contribution to the development of Neo-Confucianism in Joseon Dynasty in the early-to-mid 16th century. To find out the reasons for this low recognition of his contributions, we tried to show his integrated studies which were conducted in his lifetime with talents for both pen and sword and the ability to solve real-life problems. By investigating Baekrokdonggyuhae and Daehakdo among his present writings, we found that Park Yeong's Neo-Confucianism had the characteristics of being practice-orientated as well as having a special emphasis on self-acceptance and mind. Though Park Yeong's Neo-Confucianism was stigmatized as unorthodox by Yi Hwang and Yi Yi, two influential junior scholars, their criticism seemed to be unfair and improper, for it was derived from a prejudice against their military backgrounds and not with each other. Due to their stigmatic criticism, Park Yeong's well-informed Confucian-oriented learning and practice has been underestimate Songdang Park Yeong had become a Dohak scholar with a military background. He, who was free from social identity restrictions, had learned medicine and six arts and had taken care of people at risk in advance. He carried out his function faithfully to pass the teachings of the sages on to the next generation in the period of the extinction of Sahrim. Park Yeong's learning and practice had included Munmugyeomjeon, Silhak activity, excellent educational performance, achieving his purpose at the risk of his life, which is worth investigating considering the aspects of the various developments of Neo-Confucianism in Joseon Dynasty in a permissive way. This paper reviews the history of Korean Neo-Confucian thought from its introduction in the late fourteenth century until the end of the Joseon dynasty in the early twentieth century. With the founding of Joseon in 1392 the Neo-Confucian synthesis that had swept China was adopted in Korea, replacing the Buddhist establishment of the previous dynasty. The introductory section discusses the major figures in this transition and their grasp of the new metaphysical framework and ascetical theory which now supplemented the traditional (...) Confucian ethical core. The new teaching took deep root in the fifteenth century, but it did so in the context of succession problems leading to a series of “literati purges” of Confucians serving in government. The sixteenth century marked the coming to full intellectual maturity of the Neo-Confucian thought of the Cheng-Zhu school on the Korean peninsula. Toegye and Yulgok, the most famous names in Korean Neo-Confucian thought, represented opposing sides in the celebrated Four Seven Debate concerning the origination of feelings in the mind-and-heart. As the Mongols established the new Qing dynasty in China in the seventeenth century, Korean Neo-Confucians felt they had become the sole heritors and defenders of true civilization, leading to a period of intense and conflicted conservative orthodox orientation towards the Cheng-Zhu Neo-Confucian school. In the intense factional struggles of the time the Yulgok followers of a faction led by Song Siyeol rose to dominance, and in the early eighteenth century the second most celebrated controversy, the Horak Debate, broke out within the ranks of this single intellectual lineage. The debate is best known for the question of whether and how humans and all other creatures share the same “original nature,” but it also inquired deeply into the accessibility of the original nature in techniques of meditative self-cultivation. The latter part of the eighteenth century is known for the emergence of a broad, loosely coordinated movement away from philosophical questions towards “practical learning,” or “Silhak” as twentieth century historians have named it. Philosophical inquiry continued to have a lively life well into the nineteenth century, however, with a deepening and radicalization of lines of thought established in the earlier debates, as well as some creative crossing and merging of the boundaries that separated the intellectual lineages of Toegye and Yulgok. This article has the purpose of examining the commentation that Sung-ho Yi Ik and Da-san Jung Yak-yong developed of Sa-chil Debate (사칠논쟁) Which was a philosophical debate in Chosun Dynasty. Sa-chil Debate began from Toe-gye Yi Whang and Ko-bong Gi Dae-sung and soon as a result of Yul-gok Yi Yi and Woo-gae Sung Hon repeating the debate, It appeared as a kind of philosophical theme. After that, Yul-gok and Toe-gye's students formed a kind of school. They also made the debate (...) extended and the theory more sophisticated by criticizing a counterpart's argument on base of ideologizing their teacher's theory. About 200 years after Toe-gye died, Sung-ho Yi Ik was born and after about 250 years, Da-san Jung Yak-yong was born. Both they experienced a western naturalscience and a catholic theory as Silhak Scholars (실학자). Therefore their this kind of interpretation about Sung-li Debate must be offering a deeply interesting investigation to us. In conclusion, Sung-ho advocated Toe-gye's theory at all, adding more explanation to it and Da-san evaluated all of Toe-gye's and Yul-gok's theory to be right because their theories have a unique logicality of making a sense. Sung-ho stood on a Shilhak view point gave up a organic cosmology ofSung-li theory which has a continuity to cosmology and moral theory, arguing Sa-chil-Li bal-Yil-lo Theory (四七理發一路說) by understanding Sa-chil Debate based on only moral perspective. Even though Da-san also said Yang-si Theory (兩是論) that both their theories are all right, he argued that Toe-gye's theory is much more important in the aspect of moral practice owing to his religious opinion by a catholic affect. By the way, Sung-ho supplemented and explained Toe-gye's theory, but he had not a sufficient logic and was not objective because of his leaning into advocating Toe-gye's theory much further. Da-san had an advantage of evaluating both Toe-gye's and Yul-gok's theory to be all right, but came to argue an insufficient philosophy on account of its simplicity. (shrink)

이 연구는 정약용丁若鏞(1762~1836)의 『악서고존樂書孤存』을 통해 중국과 한국을 중심으로 하는 동양의 고대 ‘악론樂論’을 성찰해보려는 시도이다. 고대로부터 한자와 유교를 공유한 문화권에서는 음악을 단순히 유희의 대상으로 삼지 않고 인간의 내면과 관계되는 것으로 인식하였으며, 그것이 개인과 사회에 미치는 공효功效에 주목하였다. 고대인들은 ‘악樂’이 인간의 내면으로부터 나오는 것으로 간주하고 이를 인간의 수양과 교화의 중요한 수단으로 여겼다. 나아가 ‘악’은 선정善政을 이룩하는 치도治道의 핵심으로 자리잡게 되었는데, 이것이 바로 공자孔子(B.C.551~B.C.479)의 ‘예악정치禮樂政治’ 사상이다.BR 이러한 음악관이 형성된 것은 그 시기를 특정하기 어려울 정도로 매우 오래된 일이다. 또 그것은 선진先秦시대 이후 진한대秦漢代를 거쳐 (...) 매우 오랜 기간 동안 수많은 학자들의 설이 첨삭되면서 현재에 이르고 있다. 후대의 학자들은 기존의 학설에 자신들의 연구와 당대當代의 이론을 합하여 다양한 ‘악 이론’을 제시하였다. 『여씨춘추呂氏春秋』, 『관자管子』, 『사기史記』, 『회남자淮南子』, 『한서漢書』, 『후한서後漢書』, 『악서樂書』와 『율려신서律呂新書』 등은 ‘악’을 당시의 각종 우주론이나 자연론 등과 연관하여 설명하기 시작하면서 더욱 복잡해지는 양상을 띠게 된다. 또 다양한 악률산출 이론이나 율관律管의 제작법을 제시하는데, 그 이론이 서로 합치되지 않아 가닥을 잡기가 어렵다. 더욱이 이러한 이론들은 ‘악’에 대한 관념론적 성향과 이론성이 강하여 실제 악기의 조율이나 연주에 합당하지 못한 경우가 많다.BR 이러한 상황에서 조선 후기 정약용의 『악서고존』은 꽤나 눈길을 끈다. 성리학적 풍토가 강한 조선사회에서 정약용의 학문태도는 관념적인 것을 벗어나 실제 삶에서 활용될 수 있는 실용성을 추구하는 성향이 강하다. 『악서고존』도 그러한 맥락에서 저술되었다. 정약용이 『악서고존』을 통해 추구한 것은 옛 ‘악’의 원리를 밝히고 그 제도를 회복한다는 것이다.BR 이 논문은 『악서고존』의 안내에 따라 동양 고대의 ‘악 이론’을 들여다보려고 한다. 이를 통하여 원시유가의 학자들이 추구했던 예악사상의 본의를 알 수 있는 계기가 되었으면 좋겠다. 그리하여 그간의 연구자들이 관념적인 ‘악’에 치우쳐 이론상으로는 예악사상의 중요성을 강조하면서도 실제상으로는 ‘악’에 대한 언급이나 강론이 어려웠던 상황을 조금이나마 해소되기를 기대해 본다.
