Didacticism, romanticism, and classicism are the possible schemata for the knotting of art and philosophy, the third term in this knot being the education of subjects, youth in particular. What characterizes the century that has just come to a close is that, while it underwent the saturation of these three schemata, it failed to introduce a new one. Today, this predicament tends to produce a kind of unknotting of terms, a desperate dis-relation between art and philosophy, together with the pure (...) and simple collapse of what circulated between them: the theme of education. Whence the thesis of which this book is nothing but a series of variations: faced with such a situation of saturation and closure, we must attempt to propose a new schema, a fourth type of knot between philosophy and art. Among these “inaesthetic” variations, the reader will encounter a sustained debate with contemporary philosophical uses of the poem, bold articulations of the specificity and prospects of theater, cinema, and dance, along with subtle and provocative readings of Fernando Pessoa, Ste;phane Mallarme;, and Samuel Beckett. In this groundbreaking work, French legal scholar Alain Supiot examines the relationship of society to legal discourse. He argues that the law is how justice is implmented in secular society, but it is not simply a technique to be manipulated at will: it is also an expression of the core beliefs of the West. We must recognize its universalizing, dogmatic nature and become receptive to other interpretations from non-Western cultures to help us avoid the clash of civilizations. In Homo (...) Juridicus, Supiot deconstructs the illusion of a world that has become flat and undifferentiated, regulated only by supposed "laws" of science and the economy, and peopled by contract-makers driven only by the calculation of their individual interests. Such a liberal perspective is nothing but the flipside of the notion of the withering away of law and the state, promoted this time not under the banner of the struggle between classes, but rather in the name of the free competition between sovereign individuals. Supiot's exploration of the development of the legal subject-the individual as formed through a dense web of contracts and laws-is set to become a classic work of social theory. (shrink)

D’un point de vue patrimonial, le célèbre texte des Éléments de géométrie de Clairaut, publié la première fois en 1741, est traditionnellement considéré comme le début d’une riche histoire plutôt que son aboutissement, en raison notamment du succès considérable qu’il a eu dès sa parution et de la manière dont Clairaut en a défendu le projet, en rupture apparente avec le modèle euclidien. Nous proposons ici une image un peu différente qui s’appuie sur la nature très particulière de la production (...) géométrique foisonnante dans laquelle le traité de Clairaut s’insère et doit être compris. Nous présentons tout d’abord le côté paradoxal de l’ouvrage, qui revendique non seulement une grande originalité mais aussi une non moins grande conformité au genre des « éléments » de géométrie spéculative. Nous indiquons ensuite cinq raisons majeures qui montrent que le texte était en effet largement conforme aux attendus de l’époque, y compris dans sa revendication d’accessibilité et de rupture vis-à-vis du modèle euclidien. Nous dégageons deux originalités de l’ouvrage : le fait de confondre les caractéristiques des géométries spéculatives et pratiques dans un seul et même ouvrage ; et le fait d’écrire un ouvrage de géométrie suivant un « ordre analytique », mais sans algèbre. Dans les Cours d'Esthétique, qu'il prononce à Berlin entre 1820 et 1829, Hegel propose une théorie de la musique et analyse le rapport de celle-ci avec les autres arts dans l'ensemble du système philosophique. Mais comment le philosophe, qui n'est pas connaisseur, peut-il penser la musique de son temps? Sur quelle base se construit la réflexion? Et comment la reconstituer scientifiquement à partir des différentes sources? Le présent ouvrage apporte une réponse à ces questions en replaçant le discours hégélien dans (...) l'arrière-plan socio-historique de la vie musicale contemporaine, et en reconstituant, pour la première fois, la théorie de Hegel à partir des manuscrits inédits des différents cours. La spéculation apparaît alors dans toute son originalité, comme le prolongement des multiples expériences faites au théâtre et au concert. ABSTRACT This article offers an analysis of “social stupidity”: the generation of publics mobilized in a compromised manner as a result of a complex web of forces that compromises the potential for intelligent collective inquiry. The article juxtaposes this phenomenon with the notion of “social intelligence” offered by John Dewey and the concept of the “apparatus” as treated by Michel Foucault.

La dispute récurrente entre Braudel et Gurvitch a pris une nouvelle tournure en 1958 lorsque chacun explicita son approche des temps. Braudel estime que sa distinction entre trois durées historiques devrait offrir un cadre épistémologique et méthodologique commun aux sciences sociales, sociologie comprise. La typologie des temps sociaux de Gurvitch ne lui semble pas opératoire : elle est trop qualitative. Gurvitch lui répond que réalité et temps historiques se rapportent à des genres particuliers de temps sociaux, qualitatifs-quantitatifs, discontinus-continus... L’étude de (...) ces derniers confirmerait que l’historien et le sociologue ne peuvent concevoir de la même manière leur objet et leur méthode. In Braudel’s mind the distinction he made between three different historical times offered a common epistemological and methodological framework for social sciences, including sociology. For Braudel, Gurvitch’s typification of time in terms of social times seemed to be unoperative : it is too qualitative. Gurvitch replied to him that historical reality and historical times referred to specific types of social times : qualitative-quantitative, discontinuous-continuous... The study of these types would confirm that the historian and the sociologist do not conceive their object and their method in the same way. The article sketches a critical analysis of the question. In this article, I study Richard’s paradox, and I consider several of its solutions. I then restate the paradox using Kolmogorov’s theory of complexity. Taking as a starting point Chaitin’s demonstration that Kolmogorov’s understanding of «complexity» is only relative, I put forth a new solution to the paradox.

Philosophy is a paradoxical form of knowledge, and its contradictions can only be resolved by invoking the idea of a hospitality offered to every philosopher. It can itself be defined, in its way of operating, as radical hospitality offered to whatever is not itself.

In this essay, I study the departure performed in The Imaginary from the Husserlian position spanning from the Logical Investigations and the 1904/1905 lectures on the imagination. In Sartre’s conception, the imagination in its two forms is never intuitive. Moreover, in an act of imagination we can never find immanent sensible contents. In Husserl, the imagination in its two forms, is a sensible intuition, like perception. Furthermore, every act of imagination apprehends immanent sensible contents.

This paper examines the relationship between philosophy and its conditions. The affirmation “mathematics is ontology”, which I posited thirty years ago, has certain inconveniences. In this article, I present six varying possibilities for ontology. My own philosophical decision was to proclaim that being is a pure multiplicity, without the One and without any specific attribute such as “matter” or “spirit”. This movement of thought brought me to study the mathematical condition of philosophy and to search for a rigorous structuration of (...) my speculative decision within the field of mathematics. However, my initial postulate that “Being is the multiplicity without the One” is not a mathematical but a philosophical statement. This paper concludes with a presentation of the relationship between mathematics and philosophy in Being and Event, Logics of Worlds, and The Immanence of Truths. (shrink)

Dans sa Catoptrique, Héron d’Alexandrie déduit la loi de la réflexion de la lumière en s’appuyant sur un principe inédit, le principe du plus court chemin. L’article, après avoir retracé les grandes lignes de la démonstration, s’attache à mettre en évidence l’originalité et la fécondité de la méthode utilisée. Le recours à un principe d’extrémalité pour rendre compte des phénomènes lumineux tranche avec l’approche qu’adoptera Ptolémée dans son Optique par exemple, et anticipe par certains côtés l’optique géométrique moderne, dont Héron (...) apparaît comme une sorte de précurseur involontaire. Mais au‑delà de l’aspect purement historique, l’article insiste sur la portée épistémologique majeure du principe héronien, et des principes d’extrémalité en général, qui s’inscrivent dans une tradition scientifique bien précise, et toujours actuelle, celle qui privilégie, au rebours de l’expérimentalisme et de l’instrumentalisme, la causalité finale et formelle dans l’explication des phénomènes et promeut en définitive les mathématiques au rang de principe ontologique fondamental. Dans cette perspective, la démarche suivie dans la Catoptrique révèle non seulement sa profonde modernité, mais pourrait bien apparaître comme une des plus emblématiques qui soient. (shrink)

The double homoousia, confessed by the Council of Chalcedon, is certainly one of the most difficult concepts transmitted by the dogmatic tradition. What can be signified by the affirmation that Christ is homoouion to us, and to each of us? Is it possible to shift a trinitarian understanding, classical since Nicaea, into anthropological meaning in an univocal way, without reason’s injury? If it is the case, we must give the second homoousia an intelligibility right at the intersection of theology and (...) economy, which geometric center is He 5:8 so that Christology can not be understood from the two natures, purportedly known, even metaphysically (God and man), as if it should be enough to understand the mode of conjunction in Christ. This can be done uniquely in an hypostatic way, following the double definition. The hypothesis of the univocity of Chalcedonian faith offers a significance to divinization by clearing its proper location, if, and only if, we engage a new definition of (human) hypostasis, considering that this hypostasis is the one of the Word in that “perfect” man called Jesus. La notion d'esprit pourrait-elle occuper à nouveau la scène philosophique contemporaine? Oui, répond l'auteur de cet ouvrage, mais à trois conditions. Tout d'abord, revenir au moment de sa genèse car il y va alors d'un refoulement conjoint, et par la médecine hippocratique, et par la métaphysique grecque, d'une énigmatique vitalité dénommée pneuma (souffle). Ensuite, s'enquérir des principales reconfigurations du concept d'esprit au fil de l'histoire de la philosophie, en scrutant le retour du refoulé d'une vitalité qui ne pouvait qu'excéder tous (...) les systèmes prétendant déduire l'esprit d'un Esprit majuscule. Les déplacements conceptuels opérés par Descartes ou Kant, les nombreuses réactions qui s'en sont ensuivies, de Hegel à Bachelard en passant par Nietzsche et Bergson, sont autant de tentatives de définir à nouveaux frais l'esprit. Enfin, tirer parti de cet examen pour éclairer certains enjeux des débats actuels, par exemple dans le champ de l'éducation et de l'inclusion, sur le respect de toutes les formes de vie et de subjectivité.
