Most models of opinion dynamics are threshold-like. For two competing opinions the dynamics is one-dimensional and the associated opinion flow is shaped by at least two attractors separated by a tipping threshold, not necessarily located at 50 %. Initial supports are thus instrumental to determine the final debate outcome. In contrast, the absence of a tipping threshold implies a unique attractor making the initial conditions irrelevant. One of the opinions is predetermined to become the majority whatever initial support it has. (...) Accordingly, to make a threshold dynamics non threshold appears to be an instrumental strategic option. An illustration of the possibility of such a reshaping of the opinion dynamics geometry is given using the Galam sequential opinion dynamics model. The key parameters are pair interactions and inflexible or stubborn agents. A new and counter intuitive light is shed on the design of winning strategies in public issues. However the findings pose ethical issues. The case of global warming is discussed. (shrink)

퇴계는 고봉과의 논변에서 사단은 리발이므로 불선이 없다고 단언하였다. 하지만, 그는 만년에 이르러 사단도 불선해질 수 있다고 말하였다. 본 연구는 이러한 퇴계의 입장 변경이 모순이 아니라, 오히려 성리학의 난제인 선한 성에서 악한 정이 발출되는 문제를 해결하는 단초가 될 수 있다고 주장한다.BR 본 연구는 이러한 주장을 전개하기 위해, 먼저 사칠논변에서 퇴계와 고봉의 ‘사단의 불선’에 대한 논의를 살펴보았다. 그리고, 퇴계가 『성학십도』에서 천명한 사단의 리발에 대한 두 경로를 분석하였다. 그 결과, 퇴계가 만년에 사단의 불선을 말한 것은 그 본래적 속성으로 언급한 것이 아니라, 외부의 기에 (...) 의해 가로막혀 불선으로 흐를 수 있다는 상황적 의미라는 것을 알게 되었다. 특히, 갈암의 ‘칠정이 사단에 대해 횡관한다’는 해석을 통해, 칠정의 기에 의해 충돌된 사단의 기가 불선의 방향으로 바뀔 수 있다는 것을 논증하였다.BR 다음으로, 고봉의 두 명제인 ‘사단 불선’과 ‘칠정이 사단을 포함한다’가 양립하기 위해서는 필연적으로 사단과 칠정의 분별이 불가피하다는 것을 논증하였다. 또한, 퇴계가 사단은 불선, 칠정은 악이라고 부르는 의미를 고찰한 결과, 퇴계와 고봉이 모두 사단과 칠정에 관한 공통된 인식을 하고 있다는 사실을 발견하였다. 바로 그 일치된 인식은 사단은 그 순선함을 외부의 힘에 의해 빼앗기는 반면, 칠정은 그 내재적인 불완전성으로 인해 스스로 순선함을 지키지 못한다는 것이다. 이처럼 칠정과 분별되는 사단의 속성은 주자의 성정체용설에 어긋나지 않으면서도, 맹자의 성선론을 굳건하게 뒷받침할 수 있다.
