During the first semester of the academic year 1930/31 in the John Casimir University in Lvov Kazimierz Ajdukiewicz delivered a series of lectures on logical semantics. In eight of them, now published for the first time, he presents - in the very clear manner - his fractional method of identifying syntactic categories, and he shows how to use this method to eliminate the antynomies of classes, relations and properties. "Begriff" und "Kategorie" gehören zu der Klasse sprachliche Ausdrücke, die einerseits in alltäglichen Verwendungen und andererseits als philosophische Fachtermini gebräuchlich sind. Beide Ausdrücke haben eine bis in die antike Philosophie zurückführbare diskontinuierliche Geschichte und weisen dabei phasenweise systematische Affinitäten und bemerkenswerte Bedeutungsüberschneidungen auf. Alle drei Faktoren - das changierende Verhältnis terminologischer und nichtterminologischer Verwendungen, geschichtliche Verschiebungen und systematische Überschneidungen des Begriffs- und Kategorienverständnisses - hinterlassen ihre Spuren insbesondere in Kontexten, in denen unterschiedliche Fachdisziplinen wie Philosophie, Kognitionspsychologie und Sprachwissenschaften involviert (...) sind, die in je eigener Weise mit den Vorgängen des Begreifens und Kategorisierens befasst sind. Der vorliegende Beitrag will insofern über historisch-begriffsanalytische Differenzierungen zu "Begriff" und "Kategorie" einen Beitrag zum interdisziplinären Verständnis epistemischer Prozesse und ihrer Verhältnisbestimmung leisten. Like the doctrine of the categories in general, Aristotle’s category of the relative fulfils disparate functions: On the one hand, the category of the pros ti fulfils a dialectic or logical function that aims at the avoidance of fallacies. On the other hand, the category respects the peculiar mode of being of the relative. Taking these two different functions into consideration helps with the interpretation of Aristotle’s two definitions of the relative and his treatment of the properties of the relative (...) in Cat. 7, with the question whether corresponding relatives are of equal priority or ontologically independent, with the genus-species problem , and with the categorical classification of potency and act. Artykuł jest poświęcony „unikatowości” i „osobliwości” – zarówno jako terminom, które funkcjo­nują w ramach dyskursu teoretyczno-estetycznego, jak i wyrazom odgrywającym istotną rolę w języku potocznym. Poza kontekstem estetyki i filozoficznej refleksji nad sztuką są one powszechnie wykorzystywane przez podmioty realizujące zadania z zakresu polityki społeczno-kulturalnej do promowania wydarzeń, zjawisk i obiektów, mimo iż zarówno ich etymologia, semantyka oraz pragmatyka językowa wskazują, że są problematyczne. Mają bowiem w swoje definicje leksy­kalne wpisane wartościowanie, a także nabierają dodatkowej wartości oceniającej w różnych kontekstach. (...) Ponadto, bazując na słownikowych definicjach dostrzec można, że „unikatowość” i „osobliwość” są wyrazami funkcjonującymi w rodzinie semantycznej stwarzają­cej istotne ryzyko zatarcia znaczeń poszczególnych słów, czego efektem jest także niejedno­znaczność w estetyczno-normatywnej ocenie zjawisk opisywanych za pomocą „unikato­wości” i „oso­bliwości”, nawet jeśli ujmowane są ściślej, jako terminy naukowe funk­cjo­nujących w dyskursie teoretyczno-estetycznym. Analiza źródłosłowów, charakterystyka normatyw­nego potencjału „unikatowości” i „osobliwości” oraz wyrazów, które są im pokrewne, a także podkre­ślenie roli kontekstu, w jakim występują, zestawiona z podstawowym ich zna­czeniem w wy­branych językach nowożytnych, pozwoli uwidocznić kluczowe problemy językowe w doświad­czeniu potocznym, ale również wskazać istotne z punktu widzenia zagadnień specjalistycznych różnice terminologiczne. Práce zkoumá kategorii nahodilosti, jednu z nejzávažnějších v marxistické i nemarxistické filosofii. Její poznání umožní pochopení ostatních kategorií. Autor dospěl k závěru, že slova náhoda a nahodilé mají řadu pronikavě.

The article focuses on the central problem of Kant’s philosophy, namely the separation of aesthetics and transcendental dialectic, or in other words the field of senses and the field of reason, or as seen from the point of epistemology: receptivity and spontaneity. The author attempts to give the most exact picture of the source conception, as presented by Kant, adding only his own systematization and giving an account of later interpretations made from the standpoints of Neo-Kantianism and existential philosophy.

Sentimentality: this term has had an odd career that converted it from an expression of praise into one of abuse. The obvious suspicion is that the word ‚sentimental‘ has had an entirely different meaning in the 20th and 21st centuries (when it has been deployed for abuse) as compared to the 18th century (when it had been used for praise). Scrutiny shows, however, that this is not the case. Rather the very same aspects of sentimentality that had appeared to, e.g., (...) Sterne as a feat of human imagination, came to be seen from the 19th century onwards as betraying dishonesty. Hence what may look like mere linguistic change implies a substantial philosophical disagreement. Yet mustering the arguments against sentimentality, it turns out that we should be better off with a descriptive account of this attitude. Specimens of sentimentality are not failures vis-à-vis a norm of rationality; whether we like them or not is a matter of taste. (shrink)
