The present review on dyadic coping (DC) aims at providing a critical integration of both the conceptual and empirical DC literature and overcoming the limitations of past reviews by (a) describing, comparing, and integrating all the DC models, (b) presenting and integrating findings from studies based on DC models, and (c) suggesting directions for further research. The DC models identified and compared include: The congruence model (Revenson, 1994 ), the relationship-focused model (Coyne and Smith, 1991 ; O'Brien and DeLongis, 1996 (...) ), the communal coping model (Lyons et al., 1998 ), the systemic-transactional model (Bodenmann, 1995, 1997 ), the relational-cultural model (Kayser et al., 2007 ), and the developmental-contextual coping model (Berg and Upchurch, 2007 ). After discussing each DC model, we advance a conceptual integration of all models, which serves as the framework to organize the review of the empirical literature. This integration includes the following DC dimensions: (a) Stress Communication, (b) Positive DC by One Partner (supportive DC, empathic responding, delegated DC, active engagement), (c) Positive Conjoint DC (common, collaborative, communal, mutual responsiveness); (d) Negative DC by One Partner (protective buffering, overprotection, and hostility/ambivalence), and (e) Negative Conjoint DC (common negative DC, disengaged avoidance). Developmental, relational, and contextual variables are included as factors shaping DC. To be included in the empirical review, articles had to be published in or a peer-reviewed journal in English and/or German before 2017 and include an original empirical study guided by one of the DC models. The review included 139 studies and, with the exception of the congruence model whose findings were discussed separately, findings were presented for overall DC and each of the dimensions identified in the conceptual integration. Findings were grouped also according to whether the stressor related or not to a medical or mental health condition. Demographic and cultural factors affecting DC were discussed. Overall, the empirical review suggests that in Western couples, positive individual, and conjoint DC forms, taken together or separately, have individual and relational benefits for couples coping with stress in general and/or mental health or medical stressors. Research on DC can be expanded to include other populations and stressors and use improved designs. (shrink)

Identity in our multicultural world is one of the major problems of contemporary man. There are not cultures totally isolated from the others. Social groups and individuals are directly and indirectly confronted with many problems. And the modern global society needs more than ever to take adequate decisions on different problems. The concept of value is the central category of philosophical axiology. Is the general course of civilizational changes able to influence the axiological systems of autonomous cultures, involving them in (...) the process of an inevitable inner change and to testify, in this manner, to its own cultural but not transcendental nature? This is one of the main questions of the present research. My article also will stress why is significant the role of philosophers in the dialogue dedicated to the contemporary role of values within our society. The philosopher’s role, besides all is to analyze a future and criticize worldview systems in order to achieve a future value synthesis. (shrink)

This study addresses the issues of screen synthesis through which a certain type of message is suggested; in this case: the impact of films featuring violence, cruelty, and aggression, as well as the polysemantic nature of the screen message and the transformation in the receptions of adolescents between 13 and 18 years old. The focus is on the motives for choosing topics in the film industry that are related to the interpretations of aggression and crime, mainly among young people. The (...) emotional involvement of the viewer, especially during the period of physical and mental maturation, is a precarious process with unpredictable consequences and side effects. Playing with the audience, with their conscious perceptions and unconscious experiences, especially through attempts at manipulation, which are not missing, can prove to be a very dangerous territory. Abstract:Jessica Elkayam asks Mariana Ortega about the influence both Latina feminisms and Martin Heidegger have had on the development of Ortega's mestiza theory.

Draws from Latina feminism, existential phenomenology, and race theory to explore the concept of selfhood. This original study intertwining Latina feminism, existential phenomenology, and race theory offers a new philosophical approach to understanding selfhood and identity. Focusing on writings by Gloría Anzaldúa, María Lugones, and Linda Martín Alcoff, Mariana Ortega articulates a phenomenology that introduces a conception of selfhood as both multiple and singular. Her Latina feminist phenomenological approach can account for identities belonging simultaneously to different worlds, including immigrants, (...) exiles, and inhabitants of borderlands. Ortega’s project forges new directions not only in Latina feminist thinking on such issues as borders, mestizaje, marginality, resistance, and identity politics, but also connects this analysis to the existential phenomenology of Martin Heidegger and to such concepts as being-in-the-world, authenticity, and intersubjectivity. The pairing of the personal and the political in Ortega’s work is illustrative of the primacy of lived experience in the development of theoretical understandings of who we are. In addition to bringing to light central metaphysical issues regarding the temporality and continuity of the self, Ortega models a practice of philosophy that draws from work in other disciplines and that recognizes the important contributions of Latina feminists and other theorists of color to philosophical pursuits. Específicamente, Platón muestra que la falta de un criterio de verdad los lleva a comprometerse con enunciados que socavan los fundamentos de la dialéctica. In this paper we shall try to show that in the Euthydemus Plato develops a critic of the (...) Megarian's dialectic, which aims to point out the problematical sides of language theory underpinning the eristic procedure. La problématique de l’institution qui fait jour dans la pensée de Merleau-Ponty tout au long du cours au Collège de France (« L’institution dans l’histoire personnelle et publique », 1954-1955) reprend celle de la Stiftung ouverte par Husserl à fin de rendre compte des actes qui donnent lieu à la genèse et à la réactivation de sens idéaux tant dans la sphère personnelle qu’interpersonnelle. Néanmoins, la notion de Stiftung, propre d’une phénoménologie constitutive, ne suffit pas pour comprendre le choix merleau-pontien (...) de traduction: précisément pour faire partie d’une phénoménologie constitutive, la Stiftung semble plutôt s’opposer à une phénoménologie de l’institution. Et pourtant, celle-ci est posée par Merleau-Ponty à la fois comme une version de la Stiftung et comme une phénoménologie de l’institution. Comment est-il possible? Pour répondre cette question, nous proposons ici de chercher dans une autre tradition qui, moins visible mais non moins fondamentale que la phénoménologique, opère dans l’élaboration merleau-pontienne du phénomène de l’institution : la tradition sociologique et juridique française. The problem of institution that emerges in Merleau-Ponty’s thought throughout his 1954-55 course at the Collège de France, “Institution in Personal and Public History,” takes up the problem of Stiftung, formulated by Husserl to account for acts that give rise to the genesis and reactivation of ideal senses both in the personal and the interpersonal spheres. However, the notion of Stiftung, characteristic of constitutive phenomenology, is not sufficient to understand Merleau-Ponty’s choice of translation: Stiftung, precisely insofar as it belongs to constitutive phenomenology, seems instead to oppose a phenomenology of institution. Nevertheless, it is presented by Merleau-Ponty both as a form of Stiftung and as a phenomenology of institution. How is this possible? To answer this question, we propose here to look to another tradition that, less visibly but no less fundamentally than phenomenology, is operating in Merleau-Ponty’s elaboration of the phenomenon of institution, namely, the French sociological and juridical tradition. More precisely, we believe that the notion of “institution” that Merleau-Ponty was working on in the course of 1954-1955 cannot be understood without reference to the French social thought of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that we try to portray in the following pages. This tradition of thought is also set within the context of an intergenerational debate in which Merleau-Ponty participates and through which he encounters the notion of institution that he takes up in a renewed way, enriched by his own phenomenological perspective. La problematica dell’istituzione, che fa la sua comparsa nel pensiero di Merleau-Ponty durante il corso al Collège de France L’istituzione nella storia personale e pubblica (1954-1955), riprende la problematica della Stiftung, inaugurata da Husserl al fine di rendere ragione di quegli atti che danno luogo alla genesi e alla riattivazione di sensi ideali, tanto nella sfera personale, quanto in quella interpersonale. Tuttavia, la nozione di Stiftung, propria di una fenomenologia costitutiva, non basta per comprendere la scelta di traduzione operata da Merleau-Ponty: proprio poiché parte di una fenomenologia costitutiva, la Stiftung sembra piuttosto opporsi ad una fenomenologia dell’istituzione. E tuttavia, Merleau-Ponty pone quest’ultima, al contempo, come una versione della Stiftung e come una fenomenologia dell’istituzione. Com’è dunque possibile? Per rispondere a quest’interrogativo, ci proponiamo quindi di esplorare un’altra tradizione che, meno visibile ma non meno fondamentale della fenomenologia, è all’opera nell’elaborazione merleau-pontiana del fenomeno dell’istituzione: la tradizione sociologica e giuridica francese. Given the scarcity of educational materials (EM) to guide nutrition education strategies for phenilketonuric (PKU) patients, the goal of the present study was to develop and analyse the appearance and content validity of a EM directed to phenylketonuric children and their caregivers. The EM was evaluated by five professionals with expertise in the management of PKU. The material comprised 20 pages. All categories presented a satisfactory Index of Content Adequacy, meaning that the material was coherent, relevant and well structured. The (...) final Flesch Reading Ease Score index was 77. The ‘ABC of Phenyl’ Manual is appropriate and therefore suitable for use as an adjuvant in the management of phenylketonuria with pediatric patients. (shrink)

As part of a book symposium on Erwin Dekker's Jan Tinbergen (1903–1994) and the Rise of Economic Expertise (2021), Mariana Mortágua and Francisco Louçã reflect on the context of Tinbergen’s evolution and, more specifically, his change(s) of focus on how to engineer social progress compared to that of the closest of his colleagues, Ragnar Frisch.

This is a Foucault-inspired, postmodern study of ethical subjectivity. Technologies of life, personal truths and relations between truth telling and intoxication are highlighted in drug autobiographies and in materials from a study of Alcoholics Anonymous. Here other notions of the self are at play than the concept of the unified, autonomous, authentic self. These materials also offer an understanding of addiction as a dysfunction or disorganisation of temporality in everyday life.

Background Non-adherence to medication is associated with increased risk of relapse in patients with bipolar disorder. Objectives To validate patient-evaluated adherence to medication measured via smartphones against validated adherence questionnaire; and investigate characteristics for adherence to medication measured via smartphones. Methods Patients with BD evaluated adherence to medication daily for 6–9 months via smartphones. The Medication Adherence Rating Scale and the Rogers’ Empowerment questionnaires were filled out. The 17-item Hamilton Depression Rating Scale, the Young Mania Rating Scale and the Functional (...) Assessment Short Test were clinically rated. Data were collected multiple times per patient. The present study represents exploratory pooled reanalyses of data collected as part of two randomised controlled trials. Findings During the study 90.50% of the days were evaluated as ‘medication taken’, 6.91% as ‘medication taken with changes’ and 2.59% as ‘medication not taken’. Adherence to medication measured via smartphones was valid compared with the MARS. Younger age and longer illness duration were significant predictors for non-adherence to medication. Decreased affective symptoms measured with smartphone-based patient-reported mood and clinical ratings as well as decreased empowerment were associated with non-adherence. Conclusions Smartphone-based monitoring of adherence to medication was valid compared with validated adherence questionnaire. Younger age and longer illness duration were predictors for non-adherence. Increased empowerment was associated with adherence. Clinical implications Using smartphones for empowerment of adherence using patient-reported measures may be helpful in everyday clinical settings. The aim of this essay is to carry out an analysis of the multi-voiced, multi-cultural self discussed by Latina feminists in light of a Heideggerian phenomenological account of persons or "Existential Analytic." In so doing, it points out similarities as well as differences between the Heideggerian description of the self and Latina feminists' phenomenological accounts of self, and critically assesses María Lugones's important notion of "world-traveling." In the end, the essay defends the view of a "multiplicitous" self which takes insights (...) from Lugones's view of the self that "travels 'worlds'" and from other Latina feminists' accounts of self as well as from Martin Heidegger's account of Dasein. Gender researchers have only recently begun to identify how women perceive and explain the costs and benefits associated with different femininities. Yet status hierarchies among historically white college sororities are explicit and cannot be ignored, forcing sorority women to grapple with constructions of feminine worth. Drawing on interviews with women in these sororities, we are able to capture college women’s attitudes toward status rankings that prioritize adherence to narrow models of gender complementarity. Sorority chapters were ranked according to women’s perceived (...) heterosexual appeal to elite men. Women believed that top-ranked sororities conferred social power whereas middle- and bottom-ranked sororities offered greater freedom from policing over members’ bodies, fashion, and socializing. However, middle- and bottom-ranked sororities sometimes sought to rise in the rankings. When this occurred, existing members were marginalized, and a new pledge class with a greater tolerance for socializing with high-status “rapey” fraternities was sought. Women’s discussions of sorority rankings show evidence of a hybrid femininity that fuses practices from traditional models of gender complementarity and more recent models of women’s empowerment. How does everyday, inauthentic Dasein dominated by das Man become authentic? The aim of this article is to answer this and other questions about Dasein's authenticity by carrying out an analysis of the 'call of conscience'. This analysis, in turn, provides insights about Dasein's possibility for ethical existence. We will see that even though there are some puzzling issues in Heidegger's explanation of Dasein in its everydayness and its authenticity, the Heideggerian Existential Analytic is not 'anti-ethical' as some have claimed. We will also see that the Existential Analytic's commitment to the ontic raises doubts about Heidegger's claim that the Analytic is prior to any ethics and examine how reading Being and Time as a project of 'metontology' may dissolve these doubts. Finally, the paper offers a suggestion about the importance of 'authentic historicality' in a factical account of the moral life. (shrink)

RePartitura é uma instalação de arte computacional, aqui apresentada e discutida sob seus três princípios constituintes: Arte Processual; Computação Evolutiva (CE) e Abdução, do modelo triádico de pensamento Peirceano (abdução, indução e dedução). RePartitura utiliza um algoritmo computacional, especialmente desenvolvido para este fim, que mapeia características da imagem digital – de uma coleção de desenhos previamente elaborada – para um modelo musical de CE; a Síntese Sonora Evolutiva (ESSynth). Esta gera dinamicamente um conjunto de objetos sonoros. O resultado deste processo (...) é um ambiente sonoro imersivo, ao mesmo tempo variante e similar, que é aqui chamado de Paisagem Sonora Artificial. O sistema computacional generativo utiliza princípios da CE para interpretar cada desenho como um Indivíduo pertencente a uma População. Todos os indivíduos têm em comum a característica de serem similares mas nunca idênticos. O conjunto de características específicas de cada desenho é chamado de Genótipo. A interação entre distintos genótipos e suas correspondentes características sonoras, produz uma População dinâmica de objetos sonoros evolutivos. O comportamento evolutivo deste processo leva à auto organização das paisagens sonoras artificiais, formadas pela População de complexos e singulares objetos sonoros, em constante transformação, que sempre mantêm uma autosimilaridade aproximada, facilmente identificável por qualquer ouvinte. Neste artigo, apresentamos o RePartitura como uma instalação artística processual evolutiva, e descrevemos os tópicos que a permeiam, desde a criação conceitual até sua implementação computacional. Discutimos aqui a emergência no ambiente sonoro autoorganizado desta instalação, como uma forma de Abdução sintética, ocasionada pela ação de operadores genéticos contidos no ESSynth. Tal processo gera uma paisagem sonora artificial que, por nunca se repetir acusticamente, apesar de manter uma autosimilaridade cognitiva, toca no conceito de significado sonoro e musical. (shrink)

Aristotle presents two different approaches to riddle in the Poetics and the Rhetoric. In this paper, I intend to argue that, despite meaningful differences, these two views on riddle are not contradictory, but rather complementary. Taken together, they provide a valuable explanation of the structure, as well as the cognitive function, of riddle.

The aim of this essay is to analyze the notion of “loving, knowing ignorance,” a type of “arrogant perception” that produces ignorance about women of color and their work at the same time that it proclaims to have both knowledge about and loving perception toward them. The first part discusses Marilyn Frye's accounts of “arrogant” as well as of “loving” perception and presents an explanation of “loving, knowing ignorance.” The second part discusses the work of Audre Lorde, Elizabeth Spelman, and (...) María Lugones in their attempts to deal with the issue of arrogant perception within feminism, and examines how Lugones's notion of “‘world’-traveling” may help us deal with “loving, knowing ignorance.” Ultimately, the author suggests that we need to become aware of instances of “loving, knowing ignorance,” especially if we are to stay true to Third Wave feminism's commitment to diversity. Enhancing research and development and ensuring equitable pricing and access to cutting-edge treatments are both vital to a biopharmaceutical innovation system that works in the public interest. However, despite delivering numerous therapeutic advances, the existing system suffers from major problems: a lack of directionality to meet key needs, inefficient collaboration, high prices that fail to reflect the public contribution, and an overly-financialized business model.
