Ovaj rad na temelju Z. knjige Metafizike prikazuje Aristotelovo poimanje noetičke tvari i na njegovoj pozadini tumači Plotinovo poimanje noetičke tvari, sadržano prije svega u njegovom spisu O dvjema tvarima. Svrha rada je pokazati i primjereno argumentirati kako Plotin pri odredbi noetičke tvari shvaća Um u oslonu na Aristotelov usiologički nauk, a u razlici spram Platona. To posebno izlazi na vidjelo u tome da je Plotinov Um kao rod koji obuhvaća sve ideje shvaćen u smislu Aristotelovog logičkog nauka roda i (...) vrste. Time ovaj rad ukazuje na potrebu preispitivanja ustaljenih mnijenja o Plotinovoj filozofiji kao nasljedovanju Platonove filozofije.Based on the Z. book of Metaphysics, this paper presents Aristotle’s concept of noetic matter and uses its theoretical background to interpret Plotinus’ concept of noetic matter, contained primarily in his tractate Matter in its Two Kinds. The paper aims to present and adequately argument the way in which Plotinus, in his interpretation of noetic matter, understands Nous in relation to Aristotle’s usiological doctrine and in contrast to that of Plato’s. This is particularly evident in the fact that Plotinus’ Nous, as a genus which comprises all ideas, is understood in the sense of Aristotle’s logical doctrine of genus and species. Thus this paper argues for the need to re-examine conventional understanding of Plotinus’ philosophy as mere extension of Plato’s philosophy. (shrink)

U radu iznosimo shvaćanje da je novoplatonizam u Michelangelovom kiparstvu prisutan na dublji način nego li to shvaćaju oni koji u Michelangelovoj umjetnosti iznalaze tek simboličku ilustraciju određenog novoplatoničkog učenja. Novoplatonizam u Michelangelovoj skulpturi ne vidimo kao simboliku koja upućuje na određenu novoplatoničku teoriju. U tom bismo slučaju o novoplatonizmu u umjetnosti govorili kao o onome izvanjskom s obzirom na bit umjetničkog djela, budući da se samo nastajanje i jestvo umjetničkog djela ne temelji u postupku teorijskog razmatranja, već u rukotvorenju. Polazimo od shvaćanja da je novoplatonizam s Michelangelom ostvaren izravno iz umjetničkog tvorenja u samom unutarnjem obliku umjetničkog djela.In the paper we propose attitude that Neoplatonism in Michelangelo’s sculpture is present in a deeper way than it is understood by those who in Michelangelo’s art find merely simbolic illustration of specific Neoplatonic learning. In Michelangelo’s sculpture we do not see Neoplatonism as a symbolism that is indicating a specific Neoplatonic theory. In that case we would be talking about Neoplatonism in the art as the external considering the proper essence of the work of art, since the proper emergence and beingness of the work of art is not founded in the act of theoretical consideration, but in handicrafting. Our starting point is the understanding that Neoplatonism with Michelangelo realizes itself directly out of artistic formation in the proper internal form of the work of art. (shrink)

The immediate history of relations between man and nature is marked by mutual conflict. Until recently, nature had supremacy over man through the force of its natural power. During this period, the encounter with nature for man was a conflict with wholly implacable forces. Advances in science and technology have in some cases tamed the forces of nature, and now man can carry out planned and systematic violence against it. In so doing, he came to a privileged, but also sinful (...) relationship with nature. The end result proved devastating for both nature and for man. Man's quality of life has increased, but at an unacceptable cost for the environment, especially considering that both man and nature will be in dire straits in the not-so-distant future. It is urgent that man, as a reasonable officer of nature, finds ways to reconcile his relationship with nature. (shrink)

One of the tasks of language learning is the discovery of the intricate division of labour between the lexical-semantic content of an expression and the pragmatic inferences the expression can be used to convey. Here we investigate experimentally the development of the semantics– pragmatics interface, focusing on Greek-speaking five-year-olds’ interpretation of aspectual expressions such as arxizo (‘ start ’) and degree modifiers such as miso (‘ half ’) and mexri ti mesi (‘ halfway ’). Such expressions are known to (...) give rise to scalar inferences crosslinguistically : for instance, start, even though compatible with expressions denoting completion (e.g. finish), is typically taken to implicate non-completion. Overall, our experiments reveal that children have limited success in deriving scalar implicatures from the use of aspectual verbs but they succeed with ‘ discrete ’ degree modifiers such as ‘ half ’. Furthermore, children are better at spontaneously computing scalar implicatures than judging the pragmatic appropriateness of scalar statements. Finally, children can suspend scalar implicatures in environments where they are not supported. We discuss implications of these results for the scope and limitations of children’s ability to both acquire the lexical semantics of aspectuals and to compute implicatures as part of what the speaker means. Drawing upon ethnographic research on human living and producing with fungi, and Haraway’s theorization of sympoiesis and the model ecosystems of mycorrhizae developed in current mycological research, we offer a concept of _sympoietic growth_. Sympoiesis is a concept that suggests a way of thinking about growth as a more-than-human process and provides an alternative political imaginary both to current forms of economic growth and to the idea of “degrowth.” We explore human-fungi co-operation in forests, an urban park, and a shopping (...) mall, on a miso production farm, and in a Catholic parish to provide insights into the logic and relationships involved in sympoietic growth in the field of agriculture and food production. We argue that this form of food provision has a sustainable, (re)generative potential not only in ecological and social but also economic terms. In conclusion, we highlight three patterns of sympoietic growth: the absence of any urge to “take (back) control” over the multispecies dynamic on the part of the humans; a non-instrumental passion for more-than-human life; and a combination of intellectual and manual labor as a form of attachment to the more-than-human world. Honolulu: University of Hawai'i Press. Pp. xv + 167. Hardcover $45.00. Paper $17.00.In his latest book, Letting Go: The Story of Zen Master Tōsui, Peter Haskel has taken on the task of translating the traditional biography of an obscure and eccentric Japanese Zen monk of the seventeenth century, (...) the Tōsui oshō densan, which was compiled by the celebrated scholar-monk Menzan Zuihō (1683-1769). Haskel has added an impressively comprehensive critical introduction, extensive footnotes, and a concluding essay. The translation of this collection of anecdotes is accurate and very readable, and the supporting critical apparatus is a concise survey of recent critical scholarship concerning the turbulent world of Zen Buddhism in early Tokugawa Japan.The first half of Tōsui's life was unremarkable: he traveled and met various teachers and then was recognized as a master in his own right. He was eventually invited to preside over a Sōtō Zen training temple, where he settled down and led meditation retreats for five years. By the end of this time he was attracting many disciples, including some very well known monks, when suddenly he simply disappeared. At the end of a training season, instead of presiding over the usual elaborate ceremonies, he stuck a poem to the wall, and without a word to anyone walked out with just the clothes on his back. Even the earlier facts of his life are sketchy, but from this time on all we have are stories that Menzan himself acknowledges cannot be arranged in a clear chronology. According to one tale, after an extensive search, two of his closest disciples found Tōsui living among beggars. His hair and beard were wild, his Buddhist robe was tattered, and his begging bowl was broken. Tōsui berated the two for interfering with his desire to be left alone and stalked off. One disciple continued to pester him; Tōsui relented, and they set off together. At the side of the road Tōsui discovered the body of a dead beggar and set about to bury him with his own hands. He then insisted that the disciple accompany him in eating what food remained in the beggar's bowl, but the disciple was overcome with disgust. Tōsui sent him off with instructions to go study under the émigré Chinese master Kao-ch'uan, an important teacher of the newly imported Chinese Buddhism (called Ōbaku Zen in Japan). As is always the case with these stories, there is no explanation of his actions: no indication of why Tōsui chose this teacher or if there was any significance to sending his student to a teacher in another lineage.Various people continued to attempt to find Tōsui over a span of many years, but he refused to teach or even talk to most of them. Besides anecdotes like this, we have only a few short poems and ripostes that give a flavor of his irreverent style. In response to a merchant who wanted to know how to do Zen meditation, Tōsui would only say, "Soy sauce should be made in midsummer; miso should be made in winter." If people persisted in trying to see him, he simply disappeared rather than deal with them. He lived in tiny rented rooms in towns working as a maker of straw sandals, doing day labor or simply begging for his sustenance. He rejected all offers of support, and if someone attempted to get around his refusals by leaving money or [End Page 132] clothes nearby, he distributed everything to the beggars among whom he lived. As he got older he relented a bit and allowed a follower to provide a meager living for him making vinegar, using the ruse that it wasn't patronage since the rice used for making the vinegar would otherwise have been discarded.
