In this paper, we investigate the expressiveness of the variety of propositional interval neighborhood logics , we establish their decidability on linearly ordered domains and some important subclasses, and we prove the undecidability of a number of extensions of PNL with additional modalities over interval relations. All together, we show that PNL form a quite expressive and nearly maximal decidable fragment of Halpern–Shoham’s interval logic HS.

Compared to constraint-based causal discovery, causal discovery based on functional causal models is able to identify the whole causal model under appropriate assumptions [Shimizu et al. 2006; Hoyer et al. 2009; Zhang and Hyvärinen 2009b]. Functional causal models represent the effect as a function of the direct causes together with an independent noise term. Examples include the linear non-Gaussian acyclic model, nonlinear additive noise model, and post-nonlinear model. Currently, there are two ways to estimate the parameters in the models: dependence (...) minimization and maximum likelihood. In this article, we show that for any acyclic functional causal model, minimizing the mutual information between the hypothetical cause and the noise term is equivalent to maximizing the data likelihood with a flexible model for the distribution of the noise term. We then focus on estimation of the PNL causal model and propose to estimate it with the warped Gaussian process with the noise modeled by the mixture of Gaussians. As a Bayesian nonparametric approach, it outperforms the previous one based on mutual information minimization with nonlinear functions represented by multilayer perceptrons; we also show that unlike the ordinary regression, estimation results of the PNL causal model are sensitive to the assumption on the noise distribution. Experimental results on both synthetic and real data support our theoretical claims. (shrink)

This article argues that observing natural laws is crucial for preserving peace in nations across the world. Traditional natural law theories are, however, flawed and outdated. To truly modernize natural law, we propose a new concept, “political natural law” (PNL), which has the capacity of curing these flaws. We then substantiate the PNL s from the result of analyzing the institutional causes of civil wars since 1800, and link them to human dignity. Drawing partly on the Confucian scholarship on natural (...) law and human dignity, we argue that the mutual respect of human dignity is essential to building and sustaining global peace. (shrink)

Cher, T-Pain, Saez, Châton, Booba, Benjamin Biolay, Bon Iver, Yung Beef, Lady Gaga, Neil Young ou encore PNL, tous ces artistes ont en commun l’usage de l’Auto-Tune. Ce dernier désigne un logiciel permettant d’ajuster, de corriger la voix à la suite d’un enregistrement ou durant une performance. Si initialement, l’Auto-Tune permet de chanter juste, cela est également utilisé pour produire des modulations sonores donnant un caractère artificiel, robotique, non linéaire à la voix humaine. Le premier titre avec une présence marquée (...) de l’Auto-Tune est « Believe » de Cher sorti en 1998 qui connaît un succès retentissant. Depuis, si quelques artistes – à l’image de Jay-Z et son titre D.O.A. pour « Death of Auto-Tune » (2009) – dénoncent cette pratique, l’Auto-Tune a conquis l’industrie musicale et serait utilisé dans la quasi-totalité des productions (Reynolds, 2019), toutes les esthétiques confondues. El presente artículo aborda el debate filosófico entre el idealismo hegeliano y el vitalismo nietzscheano que surge en el marco de la filosofía moderna. Se trata de una transición en la que la concepción y el uso del lenguaje y la gramática pasan a tener connotaciones ontológicas fundamentales, las cuales se pueden apreciar muy bien en la contraposición de los textos principales de cada autor: Fenomenología del espíritu y Así habló Zaratustra, los cuales han conformado el corpus del presente estudio. (...) Para observar sus estructuras gramaticales, se ha visto oportuno un análisis mediante las nuevas herramientas y enfoques computacionales sugeridos desde los enfoques más recientes de las Humanidades digitales. Se trata de una aproximación cuantitativa intenta complementar la lectura cercana que un especialista puede realizar. Concretamente, se ha aplicado procesamiento del lenguaje natural, a través de un modelo preentrenado y mediante programación en R. Se ha podido detectar el tipo de términos empleados en ambos textos, distinguiendo sus diferentes funciones gramaticales, las dependencias entre términos y los tiempos verbales. El artículo muestra, cuantitativamente, cuán distante están ambos filósofos y cómo emplean de manera igualmente tenaz la gramática para dar a expresar y entender sus ideas. De sus filosofías se puede afirmar que gramática y ontología forman una unidad: la gramática se utiliza para reforzar las ideas filosóficas tanto como estas ideas están ya derivadas, conformadas, en las propias estructuras gramaticales. Finalmente, las herramientas computacionales demuestran ser, a través del presente artículo, un complemento pertinente para el análisis filosófico. (shrink)
