What contribution has Umberto Eco’s historical fiction made to knowledge of the history of medieval philosophy? His first and most famous novel, The Name of the Rose, had the merit of drawing the attention of the common reader to mediaeval thought, which is usually neglected and still not widely known. However, this portrayal was characterized by a negative and deforming image of medieval monasticism and its philosophical conceptions. By contrast the scholastic Middle Ages were looked upon by Eco with very (...) modern —even “postmodern”— eyes, so that very little was left of the Middle Ages themselves. (shrink)

During the early modern age, the teaching of philosophy pivots on the systematic manual which replaces the traditional ‘commentarium’ also in the schools run by the religious orders of the Catholic Church. When confronted with the rise and diffusion of the new philosophy and of the new science, the authors of philosophical manuals basically follow three different directions: beside the defenders of the Aristotelian-Scholastic tradition and the enthusiastic innovators, there emerges a third conspicuous orientation, which tries to take a middle (...) course and draws inspiration from the ‘philosophia eclectica’ understood as a path independent of the various philosophical schools. At the same time, the historic-philosophical perspective starts to be introduced into the systematic manual of philosophy, to the extent that it becomes an autonomous treatment with respect to the manual itself. Marsílio de Pádua a encara sob outro aspecto: a doação mostra que o imperador era superior ao papa e aos demais hierarcas da Igreja. Daí ele deduz que, dentro da sociedade, também da sociedade cristã, o imperador é a autoridade coativa suprema, da qual promana o poder coativo eventualmente (...) exercido pelo papa e os bispos. ABSTRACT The so called “Constantine Donation”, by which the pope would have become the temporal Lord, was usually regarded negatively by XIV century thinkers, or as a double effect action. Marsilius of Padua faces such problem in a different approach: the donation shows that the emperor was superior to the pope and to the others in Church hierarchy. Hence he deduces that inside society, also Christian society, the emperor is the supreme coactive authority, from whom all coactive power eventually enforced by the pope and the bishops arise. Comparando os textos não muito longos de Erasmo e de Tomás Morus a respeito da guerra, percebe-se que este possui influências daquele. Para ambos, há uma clara e radical oposição entre a guerra e o filósofo. Para a guerra, são precisos corpos rudes, que não pensam; para a Filosofia, cérebros interrogadores. Morus parece encontrar mais facilidade em aceitar alguma forma de guerra, enquanto Erasmo vitupera mais acertadamente a estupidez desta forma de violência.

The present work proposes a reflexion about difficulties involved in the distinction between “doing philosophy” and “making history of philosophy”. We support the convenience of this problematic distinction, but in a way that the coexistence of the two perspectives guarantees mutyal enrichment. In particular, we insist that the second perspective promotes an attitude that is more open to understanding the distinct ways in which the human being has tried to acces to the truth, and that avoids the self-sufficiency in which (...) the first risks falling. A costumeira afirmação de que a historiografia nasce com o iluminismo deixa, por vezes, de lado o fato de que no passado também se pensou em categorias históricas e fez-se uma história dos filósofos e uma teologia da história, com os recursos e técnicas que nem sempre são bem conhecidas.

SÍNTESE - No Discurso sobre o método e em outros textos Descartes vê uma oposição entre verdade e história e, por isso, recusa metodologicamente qualquer relação com o passado filosófico. Nisto é seguido por muitos de sua época, sendo que Malebranche o supera nesta reivindicação. Entretanto, a "astúcia da razão" mostra que coube exatamente à filosofia anti-histórica de Descartes o mérito de haver dado uma nova fisionomia à história filosófica que se desenvolveu no século XVI como gênero literário, e que (...) se encontra na raiz da transformação da "história dos filósofos" em "história da filosofia". The article draws attention to two particularly significant examples of the problematic relationship between religious authority and secular power, which has characterized the history of the West: Marsilius of Padua and Paolo Sarpi. Both are supporters of the secular state and it is not excluded that the Sarpi was aware of the doctrines contained in the Defensor pacis. In any case, Marsilius’ position is much more radical than that sustained by the Republic of Venice in the dispute of the Interdict, (...) also due to the strictly ‘scientific’ approach that characterizes the first part of the Defensor pacis. The conflict between State and Church has traditionally been seen as an obstacle to the affirmation of the modern State, but today, in the post-modern, it can also be interpreted as a double guarantee: against the pretensions of theocracy, of course, but also against the temptations of totalitarianism. Contrary to the opinion that considers the study of the history of philosophy to be useless, or sees it prevalently as subservient to today’s philosophical problems, the author maintains that a formative, not purely informative, insight is to be gained by such a study, because it helps us understand that past theories are something “other” than our contemporary view of man and the world. The history of philosophy thus reveals itself as a valuable tool for broadening and enriching our intellectual (...) – and therefore human – experience, avoiding the risk of intellectual conformism. A época é vista com os olhos calvinistas do autor, que se baseia mais na literatura histórica e polêmica que nas fontes medievais. Em diversos verbetes, 0 texto é mais romanesco que cientifico, e, em alguns casos, a fonte não declarada de referência são obras de escolásticos posteriores.

"Gregorio Piaia si è formato presso l'Università di Padova, dove si laureò il 17 febbraio 1968 con una tesi coordinata da Carlo Giacon sul tema dell'averroismo politico nel pensiero di Marsilio da Padova. Tra i suoi maestri è da ricordare ancora Giovanni Santinello, del quale fu il principale collaboratore nel guidare il gruppo di lavoro formato da giovani studiosi impegnati nel progetto di una grande Storia delle storie generali della filosofia, uscita in prima edizione in lingua italiana tra il (...) 1979 e il 2004 ed ora in corso di traduzione e aggiornamento in lingua inglese. Em relação ao nosso presente, o passado é ao mesmo tempo próximo e distante, semelhante e distinto. Geralmente estudamos a história da filosofia para encontrar semelhanças ou afinidades com nossa atitude filosófica.Mas o pensamento do passado é freqüentemente diferente do nosso e nos leva a rever nossas respeitáveis opiniões. A abertura ao “outro”, em sentido diacrônico, é hoje o valor formativo essencial (e não só informativo!) da história da filosofia.

Il graduale passaggio dall’antica “storia dei filoso” alla moderna “storia della filosofia” viene qui ricostruito nelle sue fasi essenziali, alla luce della dialettica fra tradizione e innovazione, che caratterizza il dialogo losoco inteso in senso diacronico. Ma in che senso è ancora possibile, oggi, parlare di una “storia della filosofia” distinta sia dall’attività losoco-ermeneutica sia dalla ricerca strettamente storica, qual è quella condotta dalla Intellectual history?

The author reconstructs the most significant aspects in the first steps towards a historical-philosophical interpretation of Saint Augustine from the 17th to the early 18th century, referring in particular to Jacob Brucker's Historia critica philosophiae. This interpretation is based above all on an intellectual biography of Augustine and is interwoven with some much debated questions of the time, such as Manicheism and the relation between Platonism and Christianity.
