Het succes waarmee wij ons in een democratische rechtsstaat hebben kunnen bevrijden van autoritaire stelsels en dogmatisme zal tegen ons werken wanneer we zelf geen verantwoorde invulling geven aan levenswijze en levenszin. We slaan gemakkelijk door in egoïsme, onverschilligheid, overproductie en vervreemding. De teleurstelling is groot over onze omgang met Moeder Aarde, de multiculturele problematiek, toenemende sociale ongelijkheid door zelfverrijking en de afbraak van de zorgcultuur. De oorzaken van psychisch lijden komen veelal voort uit het schenden van waarden. Wij doen (...) dit anderen aan of anderen ons. Leegte, doelloosheid en eenzaamheid zijn het gevolg. Avontuur, winstbejag, drugs, succes en sensatie moeten ons tevergeefs uit het slop halen. Vernieuwing is gewenst. Kennis over goed leven is cognitief makkelijker te verspreiden en te toetsen dan eigen attituden te onderzoeken en zo nodig gedrag zelf te wijzigen. Van toename aan zelfkennis en bewustwording van ons onvermogen is meer te verwachten. Aandacht voor psychologische en morele ontwikkeling verheldert het ontstaan van voortreffelijke persoonseigenschappen in het proces van bildung. Jonge mensen afschermen door hun een ruime dosis ‘ klassieken’ toe te dienen is niet voldoende om ervoor te zorgen dat ze een zelfstandig, kritisch oordeelsvermogen opbouwen, of om ze weerbaar te maken tegen krachten die aan dat vermogen afbreuk kunnen doen. Wat zijn de meest veelbelovende educatieve praktijken om dit vermogen te steunen? Het is hoogst onwaarschijnlijk dat hiertoe ooit een bevredigende ‘canon’ voor kennis en kunde zal worden opgesteld. Maar universiteiten kunnen in hun dagelijkse praktijk het oordeelsvermogen wel (...) stimuleren met ‘eenvoudige’ ingrepen als het verhogen van de dichtheid van de verticale en de horizontale communicatie, en het verruimen van de tijd waarbinnen deze communicatie zich kan ontplooien. Daarmee wordt de essentie van goed onderwijs gediend: het opdoen van ervaring en methodische oefening in de praktijk van reflectie. Simpel gezegd: alleen iemand die een educatie heeft genoten kan trachten een relevant en samenhangend antwoord te formuleren op de vragen waarmee de werkelijkheid hem confronteert, al zal zo’n antwoord lang niet altijd alle twijfel wegnemen. Het communicatieve effect van een collectieve email van Wouter Bos aan al zijn contacten is totaal anders dan van hetzelfde bericht gestuurd aan iedere geadresseerde persoonlijk. In de lezing zal worden ingegaan op de vraag hoe je dit soort verschillen kunt modelleren in epistemische logica. Een centrale notie hierbij is ‘common knowledge’ of ‘collectief weten’. Dit begrip zal worden geillustreerd aan de hand van een aantal logische puzzles, en van protocollen uit het dagelijks leven die bedoeld zijn om collectief weten (...) tot stand te brengen. Er zal worden uitgelegd waarom het in gevallen waar een economische belang in het geding is niet rationeel is ‘to agree to disagree’ (van elkaar te weten dat we de waarde van een economisch goed verschillend beoordelen). Hoewel in de laatste jaren sterk de nadruk is gelegd op de “autonomie” van het geschrevene ten opzichte van de schrijver en diens belevingswereld, wil deze auteur graag beginnen met een persoonlijke betuiging van erkentelijkheid. Een mens is toch wel zodanig verbonden met een geesteskind dat hij lang bij zich gedragen heeft, dat hij de aandacht en de grondigheid die uit de hiervoor geplaatste reacties spreekt, alleen maar in hoge mate kan waarderen. Hij heeft ze ervaren als toonbeelden van “ontmoeting”. (...) De verschillen tussen de drie reacties laten nog eens zien dat ontmoeting verre van monotoon is. Juist ook die verschillen vond ik leerzaam. Bij de opzet van mijn repliek wil ik aan de diversiteit zo goed mogelijk recht doen door de reacties stuk voor stuk te bespreken. Af en toe zal een “intertekstuele” opmerking wenselijk of onvermijdelijk zijn. Overigens vrees ik dat binnen het bestek van deze repliek niet voldoende ingegaan kan worden op alle vragen en tegenwerpingen. (shrink)

Kurt Godel was the most outstanding logician of the twentieth century, famous for his work on the completeness of logic, the incompleteness of number theory, and the consistency of the axiom of choice and the continuum hypothesis. He is also noted for his work on constructivity, the decision problem, and the foundations of computation theory, as well as for the strong individuality of his writings on the philosophy of mathematics. This is both surprising and unfortunate, because Krause_s philosophical system has much to offer: Through transcendental reflection on the nature of the human, Krause understands God as the one infinite and unconditioned reality, and the ultimate necessary condition of knowledge. God makes humanity, (...) nature, and reason ultimately comprehensible as the essential categories of the divine Essence. Karl Christian Friedrich Krause war ein bemerkenswerter Denker des Deutschen Idealismus. Seine Schriften können ohne Zweifel mit denen Hegels, Schellings und Fichtes konkurrieren. Gerade im Bereich der theoretischen Philosophie bietet das Krausesche Œuvre eine Fundgrube an Einsichten und Argumenten, die der heutigen, oftmals betont postmodernen oder atheistischen Philosophie eine dringend benötigte Kontrastfolie sein können. Sinn und Zweck der Arbeit ist es, den Panentheismus Krauses zeitgemäß darzustellen und Brückenschläge zur heutigen religionsphilosophischen Debatte aufzuzeigen.

The world is undeniably full of injustice. Many feel that much political philosophy is practically impotent and engaged instead in overly abstract theorising insufficiently sensitive to the realities of the world. One response to this concern is David Miller’s influential model of evidence-based political philosophy, which claims to be sensitive to empirical evidence from the social sciences, takes seriously people’s opinions, and defends the role of facts in grounding normative principles. Using various examples from the field of global justice, one (...) of Miller’s key areas of work, I show that Miller’s method is unconvincing on two levels. His theoretical argument for fact-dependence is flawed, and his practical argument for an opinion-sensitive political theory is either guilty of status quo bias or, in an attempt to escape it, becomes self-defeating. While the paper is primarily critical, I endeavour also to draw out the implications of my critiques for the role of the ‘real world’ in theorising. (shrink)

Role-based database management systems are most widely used for information storage and analysis but are known as vulnerable to insider attacks. The core of intrusion detection lies in an adaptive system, where an insider attack can be judged if it is different from the predicted role by performing classification on the user’s queries accessing the database and comparing it with the authorized role. In order to handle the high similarity of user queries for misclassified roles, this paper proposes a deep (...) metric neural network with strategic sampling algorithm that properly extracts salient features and directly learns a quantitative measure of similarity. A strategic sampling method of heuristically generating and learning training pairs through Monte Carlo search is proposed to select a training pair that can represent the entire dataset. With the TPC-E–based benchmark data trained with 11,000 queries for 11 roles, the proposed model produces the classification accuracy of 95.41%, which is the highest compared with the previous models. The results are verified through comparison of quantitative and qualitative evaluations, and the feature space modelled in the neural network is analysed by t-SNE algorithm. (shrink)

Transgender people have among the highest rates of suicide attempts of any group in society, driven strongly by the perception that they do not belong in the sex of their physical body. Gender reassignment surgery is a procedure that can change the transgender person’s physical body to accord with their gender identity. The procedure raises important ethical and distributive justice concerns, given the controversy of whether it is a cosmetic or medical procedure and the economic costs associated with performing the (...) procedure. This paper argues that there is a strong case for funding GRS as a matter of clinical necessity and justice. This paper will be divided in four key sections: First, the state of transgender health will be outlined, including the role of GRS and common objections to it. Second, a number of common objections to GRS will be analysed at the outset and shown to be unconvincing. Third, a constructive argument will be advanced, arguing that publicly funded GRS is clinically necessary, cost-effective, and demanded by principles of justice. Fourth, the paper will briefly discuss moralistic biases and why we demand a higher burden of justification for funding GRS compared with other analogous procedures. (shrink)
