Paul of Venice and the Plurality of Forms and Souls.Thomas Jeschke - 2023 - American Catholic Philosophical Quarterly 97 (4):555-575.
In this paper, I focus on Paul of Venice’s plurality of forms and souls, i.e., his “two total souls” theory. I argue that this specific theory is a result of Paul’s reception of various positions originating from fourteenth-century Parisian philosophers like John of Jandun, the Anonymous Patar, Nicole Oresme, John Duns Scotus, and Walter Burley. By receiving these positions and by making use of merely parts of their doctrines, Paul creates a theory of the hylomorphic compound that fits well within (...)

Über natürliche und übernatürliche Gottesliebe - Durandus und einige Dominikaner gegen Jakob von Viterbo.Thomas Jeschke - 2009 - Recherches de Theologie Et Philosophie Medievales 76 (1):111-198.
The doctrinal part of this study focuses on the early fourteenth-century debate concerning whether human beings are to love God more than themselves. The main protagonist in the debate is Durand of St. Pourçain, who argues that we are to love God more than ourselves, and not only by a charitable love but also by a natural kind of friendship. Durand, who is best known in the secondary literature as an opponent of Thomas Aquinas, holds himself in this case close (...)

Die Lehre von den Seelenpotenzen bei Durandus von Saint-Pourçain: Eine philosophische Psychologie im Übergang vom Hoch- zum Spätmittelalter.Thomas Jeschke - 2021 - Leiden; Boston: Brill.
Durandus of Saint-Pourçain’s doctrine of the soul and its faculties is paradigmatic for a philosophical psychology at the turn from High to Late Middle Ages. For, on the one hand, Durandus discusses and adopts many peculiarities of 13th-century doctrines of the soul; on the other hand, Durandus’s doctrine of the soul is much more in line with late 14th-century positions. Even if he treats the theories of Thomas Aquinas, John Duns Scotus or Henry of Ghent and partly adopts their views, (...)

Deus ut tentus vel visus: die Debatte um die Seligkeit im reflexiven Akt (ca. 1293-1320).Thomas Jeschke - 2010 - Boston: Brill.
This book sheds light on the 13th/14th-century debate about whether beatitude is a reflexive act. It reconstructs this discussion on the basis of the original sources. Furthermore it investigates into hermeneutical matters of medieval text interpretation.

Practices and techniques of imparting competency and knowledge are always essential for any mediation- or transfer process. Based on the distinctive master-disciple relationship, this volume examines individual ways of life, social contexts and institutional requirements as well as discursive practices and epistemological implications of this key relationship bequeathing culturally conveyed proficiencies and culturally encoded knowledge.

(1 other version)Thomas Mores Utopia als Philosophie: Plädoyer für eine dialogische Lesart.Thomas Jeschke - 2021 - Philosophisches Jahrbuch 128 (1):3-20.
Thomas More’s Utopia is an iridescent and enigmatic work which evades a consistent interpretation. Throughout the entire dialogue, many contradictory positions are argued for, and More’s play with telling names makes it difficult to determine which person’s position we should embrace. In order to evade these problems, the paper suggests reading More’s work as a philosophical dialogue with the reader, in which More invites us to evaluate the different positions contained in the work against our own back- ground. In this (...)

    Consensus.Andreas Speer & Thomas Jeschke (eds.) - 2024 - Berlin-Boston: De Gruyter.
