The Hegel Lectures Series Series Editor: Peter C. Hodgson Hegel's lectures have had as great a historical impact as the works he himself published. Important elements of his system are elaborated only in the lectures, especially those given in Berlin during the last decade of his life. The original editors conflated materials from different sources and dates, obscuring the development and logic of Hegel's thought. The Hegel Lectures series is based on a selection of extant and recently discovered transcripts and (...) manuscripts. Lectures from specific years are reconstructed so that the structure of Hegel's argument can be followed. Each volume presents an accurate new translation accompanied by an editorial introduction and annotations on the text, which make possible the identification of Hegel's many allusions and sources. Lectures on the Proofs of the Existence of God Hegel lectured on the proofs of the existence of God as a separate topic in 1829. He also discussed the proofs in the context of his lectures on the philosophy of religion (1821-31), where the different types of proofs were considered mostly in relation to specific religions. The text that he prepared for his lectures in 1829 was a fully formulated manuscript and appears to have been the first draft of a work that he intended to publish and for which he signed a contract shortly before his death in 1831. The 16 lectures include an introduction to the problem of the proofs and a detailed discussion of the cosmological proof. Philipp Marheineke published these lectures in 1832 as an appendix to the lectures on the philosophy of religion, together with an earlier manuscript fragment on the cosmological proof and the treatment of the teleological and ontological proofs as found in the 1831 philosophy of religion lectures. Hegel's 1829 lectures on the proofs are of particular importance because they represent what he actually wrote as distinct from auditors' transcriptions of oral lectures. Moreover, they come late in his career and offer his final and most seasoned thinking on a topic of obvious significance to him, that of the reality status of God and ways of knowing God. These materials show how Hegel conceived the connection between the cosmological, teleological, and ontological proofs. All of this material has been newly translated by Peter C. Hodgson from the German critical editions by Walter Jaeschke. This edition includes an editorial introduction, annotations on the text, and a glossary and bibliography. (shrink)

Wilhelm Stekel was an Austrian physician and psychologist and one of Freud’s earliest followers. This title, originally published in 1921, was the author’s favourite of his own work. In the preface he says: ‘It was written in the beautiful years in which the first rays of analytic psychognosis penetrated the darkness of the human soul.’ Covering a variety of topics he takes a psychoanalytic look into _The Depths of the Soul_.

Eine der grossten Schwierigkeiten eines symmetrischen, wechselseitigen Verstehens und Kooperierens ist die Eigenzentrik des Verstehenskriteriums aufgrund der eigenen Lebensform - mit der hochst bedenklichen Konsequenz des Wittgenstein-Mottos dieses Buches, namlich dass wir uns in den Anderen nicht finden konnen. Korrigiert wird dieser Aspekt des interkulturellen Verstehens durch das Konzept einer von allen Kulturen geteilten, allgemeinen menschlichen Lebensform, die wiederum bei Wittgenstein den Rang eines interkulturellen Verstehens-Aprioris einnimmt und die Funktion hat, Sprachspiele und ihre divergierenden Regeln ineinander zu ubersetzen. Wittgensteins spate (...) Untersuchungen tragen aber auch dem Problem unaufhebbarer Kommunikationsgrenzen Rechnung. Und zwar in ihrer Theorie einer -Grammatik- von Weltbildsatzen, die keinerlei Verstehensbrucken zu Weltbildsatzen fremder Kulturen erlaubt. <BR> Die Aufsatze dieses Sammelbandes, der die Ergebnisse des dritten Wittgenstein-Symposions der Deutschen Ludwig Wittgenstein Gesellschaft e.V. zusammenfasst, sind dieser Problematik gewidmet und versuchen, die unterschiedlichen interkulturellen Verstehensmodelle auszuarbeiten, ihre Schwierigkeiten zu analysieren und angemessene Losungsvorschlage zu entwickeln.". Seit über hundert Jahren wartet eine interessierte Öffentlichkeit auf eine umfassende, kritische, kommentierte Edition der Briefe Wilhelm von Humboldts. Die lange Reihe prominenter Akteure der Goethe-Zeit (bzw. der Napoleonischen Ära), die zu den Briefpartnern dieses Staatsmannes, Bildungsreformers und Sprachforschers zählen, sowie die Vielfalt der Themen – neben den bereits genannten sind dies vor allem Philosophie, Literatur, Philologie, bildende Kunst, Politik, diplomatische Korrespondenz, Geschichte – und nicht zuletzt die literarischen Qualitäten der Brieftexte selbst machen dieses umfangreiche Briefcorpus zu einem der (...) bedeutendsten der Epoche: ein Zeitgemälde auf höchstem Niveau. Die Ausgabe wird in drei Abteilungen erscheinen: I. Jugendbriefe, Brautzeit, erste Ehejahre (1781–1802) II. Amtszeit (1802–1819) III. Altersmuße (1820–1835). Die I. Abteilung wird fünf Bände umfassen. Band 1 beginnt mit Briefen des 13-jährigen Knaben; erster Schwerpunkt ist die Reihe schwärmerischer Briefe an Henriette Herz und weitere Mitglieder der „Verbindung“, einer Vereinigung zur gegenseitigen moralischen Vervollkommnung, die Humboldt bis zur Verlobung mit Karoline von Dacheröden intensiv beschäftigte; danach stehen die Briefe an die Braut im Vordergrund. Außerdem spielen die Briefe an Georg Forster und Friedrich Heinrich Jacobi eine wichtige Rolle; auch die später umfangreiche Korrespondenz mit Carl Gustaf von Brinkman beginnt bereits in dieser Periode. Mit der Eheschließung im Juni 1791 wird der Band abgeschlossen. Der Band enthält 198 Briefe, davon 21 bisher ungedruckte. (shrink)

La thèse de Hegel sur l’identité de la substance comme sujet vient d’une conception autoréférentielle de l’identité, soit de sa correspondance avec soi-même. Cette conception diffère de tous les autres concepts traditionnels, non-réflexifs sur les variantes de l’identité, introduites par Leibniz, Hume ou Frege et par Quine. La base de toutes les réflexions et discussions sur l’étant est que la substance dans sa conception est circulaire d’elle même, autoréférentielle et a priori identique à elle-même. Néanmoins, cette correspondance conceptuelle avec soi-même (...) est en même temps – dialectiquement parlant – une non correspondance de toutes ses qualités substancielles avec soi-même, elle est leur autosuppression et leur apparition. Ainsi l’autre, le négatif, appartient à la détermination conceptuelle interne de la substance même, et le vrai, dans l’expérience et la science, devient un processus d’ordre de contraires, de manifestations visibles de la conscience.
