The limbus is a narrow band of tissue that encircles the cornea, the transparent ‘window’ into the eye. The outermost layer of the cornea is the epithelium, which is necessary for clear vision. The limbus acts as a ‘reservoir’ for limbal stem cells which maintain and regenerate the corneal epithelium. It also functions as a barrier to the conjunctiva and its blood vessels. Limbal stem cell deficiency is a general term for diseases which are characterised by the impairment (...) of the limbus, limbal stem cells and their ability to replenish the corneal epithelium through proliferation and differentiation. Consequently, sufferers experience chronic pain and progressive blindness. This paper will highlight the salient milestones of limbal stem cell biology and potential future treatments for limbal stem cell deficiency. (shrink)

In this paper I argue from a number of positions that are, while not uncontested, at least common among analytic philosophers of religion for the possibility, and indeed the plausibility, of a doctrine of limbo. The account of limbo that I advocate is substantially different than the element of Catholic speculative theology that goes by the same name. According to that doctrine, the limbus infantium is a place or state of perfect natural happiness for those who, prior to the (...) age of reason, die without baptism. Given the possibility of ‘baptism by desire’, the need for limbo, as I shall develop it, is not based on whether or not an agent has received the sacrament of baptism. Instead limbo is, I argue, a place where individuals who have not had sufficient opportunity to be reconciled to God in the present life will be given the opportunity to do so in the next life. Limbo, so understood, is a place which allows for the post-mortem healing and growth of individuals so that they are able to choose either for or against God in the way required for redemption in this life. On this view, limbo is not a place of ‘second-chances’, but rather a place of first-chances for those who were denied them in their terrestrial life. (shrink)

Many in the Christian tradition affirm two things: (1) that Jesus Christ descended to Hades/Limbus Patrum on Holy Saturday and (2) that the human nature of Jesus is a hylemorphic compound, the unity of a human soul and prime matter. I argue that (1) and (2) are incompatible; for the name ‘Jesus’, ‘Christ’, and ‘Jesus Christ’ rigidly designates a human being. But, given a certain view of hylemorphism, the human being, Jesus, ceased to exist in the time between his (...) death and resurrection. So, Jesus did not descend to Hades/Limbus Patrum, even if God the Son did. (shrink)

Dalam tradisi Kristiani gambaran tentang surga dan, terutama, neraka berlimpah. Dengan melukiskan keindahan surga dan, lebih lagi, kengerian api penyucian dan neraka para pengkhotbah pernah berusaha untuk mengarahkan umat ke hidup yang baik. Tetapi sekarang “hal-hal akhir” jarang dibicarakan dalam khotbah. Seakan-akan kurang njamani mengajukan pertanyaan tentang apa yang terjadi sesudah kematian. Padahal justru berhadapan dengan sikap acuh tak-acuh sebagian masyarakat tersekularisasi dengan ejekan dari sudut ateisme baru, baik orang beriman maupun mereka yang mencari justru mengajukan pertanyaan seperti: Apakah ada (...) hidup sesudah kematian? Apakah hakikat surga? Apakah betul Allah akan menyiksa para pendosa dalam neraka? Apakah barangkali neraka kosong? Dan apakah maksud serta dasar ajaran tentang api penyucian yang tidak dipercayai oleh Gereja-gereja Ortodoks dan Protestan? Kalau kita mencari informasi mendalam yang memungkinkan menjawab pertanyaan-pertanyaan itu, apabila kita tahu latar belakang religius dan budaya ajaran tentang “hal-hal akhir” itu serta apa yang dipikirkan oleh para teolog Kristiani paling mutakhir, kita akan merasa sangat terbantu oleh buku yang ditulis oleh Dr. Theol. Johanna Rahner, guru besar pada Fakultas Teologi Katolik Universitas Kassel, ini. Sayang, buku ini hanya tersedia dalam bahasa Jerman................................ Buku ini penting pada zaman di mana bagian hakiki setiap agama—apa yang akan terjadi dalam dan sesudah kematian—jarang diangkat. Kekuatan Johanna Rahner adalah bahwa ia membahas tema itu dari pelbagai sudut: dari sudut mitos-mitos dan agama-agama kuno, dari sudut Perjanjian Lama dan Perjanjian Baru, dari sudut teologi serta pelbagai “ajaran” yang muncul selama 2000 tahun Gereja dan Kristianitas, sampai dengan teologi paling muthakhir yang membuka perspektif yang sangat baru dibandingkan dengan pengertian tradisional. Johanna Rahner sendiri merangkum maskud bukunya: “Tantangan menentukan eskatologi adalah sandungan kematian yang berkaitan dengan pertanyaan yang tak terbungkamkan tentang keadilan serta harapan tak terpuaskan agar kerinduan yang mengharapkan agar pada akhirnya semuanya menjadi baik jadi terpenuhi.” Yang tidak dibicarakan dalam buku ini adalah pertanyaan-pertanyaan tentang universalitas atau keterbatasan penyelamatan Ilahi. Juga tidak dibicarakan adalah pertanyaan yang kelihatannya merupakan dobrakan baru, yang beberapa tahun lalu muncul dalam suatu konferensi teologis di Vatikan, yaitu apakah anak kecil, anak yang mati sebelum dilahirkan, bisa masuk surga atau harus dianggap masuk ke dalam suatu limbus. Buku ini cocok bagi para teolog serta bagi setiap warga Kristianitas yang ingin memahami secara mendalam ajaran tradisional dan muthakir Gereja Katolik tentang ke mana kita akan pergi dalam kematian. Paracelsus is an extraordinarily difficult author to interpret, in part because of the seemingly elusive boundary between literal and metaphorical levels of meaning in his work. The present paper argues for a literal reading of Paracelsus, based on comments that he makes in his late Philosophia de divinis operibus & factis & de secretis naturae. The article also includes a translated chapter from one of the treatises in that work, De lunaticis.
