Psychological research is based on philosophical assumptions which are not always explicitly formulated. On the other hand, the results of these investigations affect philosophical thinking and the conception of human nature. For a long time it was a ruling conception in psychology that the essence of human nature consists in the existence of driving mechanisms with homeostatic properties drives or needs – which, principally, are inborn mechanisms modified by learning. The analysis of driving mechanisms founded on psychological and neuro-physiological data, (...) brought about a modification of this traditional view. Starting from the concept of need as an objective phenomenon it can be stated that the higher organisms have a special mechanisms securing the satisfaction of needs. They are drives. These mechanisms do not exist in a ready form in man but only potentially, as an ability to organize a functional unit in result of certain experience. The formation of drives includes: making connections between certain internal stimuli and some forms of activity reducing these stimuli; learning how to find things which are necessary to reduce them; and, finally, the acquisition of the ability to give verbal labels to the occurring processes. In consequence, the final form of a drive is determined by biological and social factors as well as by individual experiences. (shrink)

Moralists and philosophers of law often demand that the axiological systems be in conformity with “human nature”, or with “nature”. Among conceptions which look for footing in human nature two main trends may be distinguished.

Artykuł rekonstruuje najważniejsze elementy filozofii polityki Dawida Hume’a dotyczące możliwość ukonstytuowania się państwa. Zdaniem szkockiego filozofa warunkiem wyjścia ze stanu natury jest określenie praw własności, które w dalszej konsekwencji prowadzi do stworzenia prawa pozytywnego oraz wskazania reguł sprawowania władzy. Hume wskazuje na psychologiczne przesłanki powstania państwa, odnajdując je w naturalnej dla wszystkich ludzi motywacji egoistycznej i ograniczonej życzliwości. Wizja powstania państwa, wynikająca ze sposobu, w jaki Hume rozumiał udział rozumu i namiętności w ludzkim doświadczeniu, stanowi jednocześnie kontynuację krytycznego namysłu nad (...) filozofią praktyczną wywodzącą się w brytyjskiej filozofii od Locke’a i Hobbesa. The aim of the article is to verify a thesis Fukuyama once advanced: the forthcoming end of history is related to the replacing of human need for appreciation by equality and mutual appreciation last men achieve in liberal democracies. I also analyze the conception of human nature which Fukuyama takes for granted and treats as the base for defining the essence of the last man. Another question I consider concerns the role of Platon’s thymos and can be stated as follows: (...) is it justified to draw such far reaching conclusions from the notion as Fukuyama does in The Las Man? To answer the question I confront Fukuyama’s reflections concerning thymos with Hobbes’ and Rousseau’s understanding of the notion, and the idea of the end of history with the idea of generation proposed by Jose Ortega y Gasset. Although David Hume was one of the central figures of the eighteenth century, the answer to the question whether he can be considered as a representative figure of the age of Enlightenment, is not so obvious. To approach this question I shall analyze in this paper some of Hume’s Essays devoted to morality, politics and literature, which were widely read and discussed by his contemporaries and had a significant impact on the public opinion. The aim of this article is to (...) consider which content of Hume’s Essays is an expression of Enlightenment ideas. First I present main elements of Enlightenment thought, such as the idea of progress, the role of reason and experience and the critical attitude to religion. Secondly, focusing on the content of Hume’s Essays, I show that some features of his work are an expression of the main Enlightenment ideas. In the last part of my paper I discuss to which extent Hume can be considered as a representative figure of the Enlightenment. (shrink)

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie informacji o życiu i dorobku naukowym oraz publicystycznym ks. Jana Ciemniewskiego (1866–1947). Podstawą źródłową służącą opracowaniu niniejszej publikacji są główne dzieła polskiego kapłana. Posiłkowano się również opracowaniami filozoficznymi i teologicznymi zagadnień, które rozważał opisywany uczony, powstałymi zarówno w okresie jego aktywności naukowej i duszpasterskiej, jak i po jego śmierci. Ciemniewski był kapłanem interesującym się filozofią i teologią oraz pedagogiką. Był twórcą systemu filozofii wychowania opartego na klasycznej, arystotelesowsko-tomistycznej koncepcji natury ludzkiej osoby oraz etyce zakładającej konieczność wychowania (...) człowieka poprzez kształtowanie w nim cnót kardynalnych. Szczególnym przedmiotem zainteresowań uczynił doskonalącą rozum cnotę roztropności, a także cnotę męstwa i umiarkowania, nazywaną przez siebie cnotą wstrzemięźliwości. Twierdził, że w wychowaniu nie tylko dzieci i młodzieży, ale także i dorosłej części społeczeństwa, należy zwracać uwagę na walkę z alkoholizmem i nieczystością, ponieważ one głównie zagrażają egzystencji jednostek i narodu. Pisał, że alkohol nie tylko osłabia wolę człowieka, ale także uszkadza jego system nerwowy oraz przyczynia się do zubożenia materialnego osoby nadużywającej tego trunku. Opracowując swoją koncepcję wychowania, Ciemniewski korzystał z bogatego dorobku myśli europejskiej. Interesował się także psychologią eksperymentalną oraz czerpał inspiracje od polskich psychologów (J. Ochorowicz, R. Radziwiłłowicz, T. Jaroszyński). Krytykował liberalizm etyczny, materializm, hedonizm. Według tego uczonego właściwe wychowanie polega na usprawnianiu ludzkiego intelektu i wzmacnianiu siły woli człowieka. (shrink)

Wspołcześnie filozoficzne studia nad ludzką tworczością nie zamykają się jedynie na opisie życiorysow geniuszy i na estetycznych analizach oryginalnego wytworu. Wraz z poszerzeniem granic pojęcia creatio, rozumianego obecnie często jako uniwersalna ludzka potencjalność tworzenia (kreatywność), rozszerzyło się też pole możliwych analiz do podjęcia w ramach kiełkującej dopiero dziedziny filozofii tworczości. Pojawiły się też jednocześnie nowe dylematy do rozwiązania.W niniejszym tekście pokazuję ową rożnorodność i problematyczność wspołczesnych badań nad fenomenem tworczości poprzez (1) wymienienie głownych opozycyjnych głosow w dzisiejszych analizach, a (...) także (2) przez opisanie obecnie wiodących kierunkow studiow podejmowanych wokoł tego zagadnienia. Podniesione zostaną tutaj m.in. takie problematyczne kwestie jak: egalitarność vs. elitarność tworczości, miejsce świadomości i racjonalności w procesie tworczym, natura tworczości naukowej, perspektywa międzykulturowa w badaniach nad kreatywnością, naturalizowanie ludzkiej tworczości czy też rola wyobraźni oraz dziecięcej zabawy w udawanego w kształtowaniu zdolności tworczych człowieka. Artykuł ma na celu porównanie dwóch współczesnych nurtów postrzegania człowieka. Posthumanizm, oparty na zasadach naturalnych i biologicznych, rozumie człowieka jako projekt podległy nieustannym zmianom. Usiłuje nakreślić perspektywy jego rozwoju poprzez działania techniczne i biotechnologiczne. Zasadniczymi postulatami tego nurtu są: wydłużanie życia biologicznego, poprawa zdrowia oraz samopoczucia, fuzja ludzkiego mózgu ze sztuczną inteligencją oraz przeniesienie ludzkiej świadomości na niebiologiczny nośnik w celu uczynienia jej nieśmiertelną. Plushumanizm, oparty na personalistycznej koncepcji osoby ludzkiej oraz przesłankach nadprzyrodzonych, formułuje odpowiedź na postulaty posthumanistyczne, ukazując człowieka (...) jako byt ontologiczny, jedność psychofizyczną, cechującą się niezmienną naturą duchową oraz dziecko Boże. Człowiek powołany jest do pełni swego rozwoju nie tylko na płaszczyźnie naturalnej, lecz także nadprzyrodzonej. Możliwe jest osiągnięcie przez wszystkich ludzi swej pełni oraz nieśmiertelności na podstawie historycznego faktu zmartwychwstania Chrystusa oraz prawd zawartych w Piśmie Świętym. Ostatecznym przeznaczeniem człowieka jest nieśmiertelność oraz pełnia szczęścia w królestwie niebieskim, do którego nie wchodzi on jako _anima separata_, lecz jedność duszy z ciałem uwielbionym (_soma pneumatikon_). O wzroście jego człowieczeństwa nie decyduje genetyczne czy farmakologiczne wzmocnienie, lecz duchowe bogactwo, przejawiające się w miłości i postawie podarowania siebie drugim. (shrink)

Here in the proem to his fifth book Lucretius is praising the philosophical achievements or discoveries of Epicurus through favourable comparison with other discoveries of traditional heroic or divine figures; first, in this passage, with the products of bread and wine associated with the gods Ceres and Liber , and later with the deeds of the god-hero Hercules. This technique clearly derives from the σγκρισις of formal rhetoric, one of the basic exercises through which composition was taught in ancient schools, (...) and Lucretius begins with ‘confer’, an imperative which has something of a formulaic force in rhetorical comparisons. But it is not the purpose of this note to point out the rhetorical qualities of this passage; Lucretius' treatment of Ceres and Liber has other important literary and philosophical associations, links which have not been noted or explored by scholars. This paper deals with the role played by science in the elaboration of a philosophical image of nature. In particular, I will consider two alternative approaches. On the one hand, I will look at Sellars’ distinction between the manifest image of man, stemmed from common sense framework, and the scientific image, which involves the postulation of imperceptible entities to explain the behaviour of perceptible things. On the other hand, I will focus on Merleau-Ponty’s redefinition of the Husserlian distinction between the (...) natural dimension of lifeworld and the artificial horizon of scientific attitude. I will show that Sellars’ scientific realism turns out to be a mere reduction of Nature to complexes of physical particles; by contrast, Merleau-Ponty’s emergentism describes Nature as an articulated structure divided in different layers, each of them understood as a self-organizing totality. Accordingly, I claim that Merleau-Ponty’s rehabilitation of Philosophy of Nature, as an attempt to think the complexity of reality, becomes an inquiry on the way through which “Science” arises from the symbolic and virtual behaviour of that living organism called “man”. Following Foucault's critique of the human sciences, Vanessa Lemm discusses the reception of Nietzsche's naturalism in philosophical anthropology, psychoanalysis and gender studies. She offers an original reading of homo natura that brings back the ancient Greek idea of nature and sexuality as creative chaos and of the philosophical life as outspoken (...) and embodied truth, perhaps best exemplified by the Cynics' embrace of social and cultural transformation.
