Abstract

This is much more than a translation of Binswanger's important papers. Needleman's stimulating introduction explicates the core of Binswanger's Daseinanalyse. Focusing his attention on what Needleman calls the "existential a priori," he attempts to show how Binswanger's thought is related to the tradition of Kant, Husserl and Heidegger. In a suggestive analysis of the nature of explanation, Needleman also argues that Binswanger's Daseinanalyse complements Freudian psychoanalysis. A well-designed study which serves as an excellent introduction to the thought of Binswanger and the more general topic of existential psychoanalysis.—R. J. B.
